Location: Good ole SE Mo | Got a friend who is freaking out!!! Her horse bled out of it's nose after a workout last week/early this week. Then she found her in the pasture with a large pool of blood on the ground where they stand under some trees. So she has an appt to scope in the morning. Vet is saying something about clogged artery and if so it's pretty much a death sentence. So anyone have suggestions on what it might be instead or experiences with something similar? Sorry I don't have great details or even close to the whole story but like I said she's freaking out and I'm trying to stay positive :) thanks guys |

Location: Bandera, TX | It all depends on where the bleed is if its a death sentence. Keep the horse away from any dust. Allow her to keep her head down. If she had a bleed in the lungs she needs rest and antibiotics and no riding in any dusty conditions. (I have one that is sitting out because I care that much for him, we've had no rain and that means dust.) Did the horse have any signs of sinus infection or guttural pouch infection? |

Location: Good ole SE Mo | Thanks for the info. I will pass it along. Not sure on the infection but if I had to guess the mare hasn't been showing much sign of illness or anything. This lady is very aware of what's going on with her horses. |

Location: Good ole SE Mo | This is what I got from her: Dont see anything abnormal anywhere except a knot on right side of her face by her eye hard not sore to touch been watching it so no change She isnt in any dusty conditions it rained all night havnt rode her all week |

Thank you!!! I will tell her that too!!! Oh and she has a vet appt at 1 today

I agree. I would request an endoscope then do xrays based on what the vet sees via the endoscope. I had a mare bleed out the nose, everyone immediately pressured me to put her on Lastix. Had her scoped and it ended up being sinus issues caused by dental issues. |

Here's a possibilty as well. This is what we initally thought were were dealing with regarding my mare but as I said it was something else. Ethmoid hematomas are most commonly reported in middle-aged geldings, although can occur in both young horses and mares as well. The most common complaint or observation of owners is a mild, intermittent bilateral or unilateral epistaxis, or nosebleed. There may also be a respiratory noise associated with the mass if it is obstructing airflow due to location or size of the hematoma, malodorous breath, as well as a possible facial swelling and head shaking or reports of being head shy. Keep us posted on what the vet finds outs.

Did they xray it? If a sinus cavity is fractured and there are any bone fragements, they may need to remove them. |

Location: Good ole SE Mo | I do not know if they x-rayed but I'm sure they did. I know she came home with lots if meds and gonna rest her for awhile. |
