Location: Missouri | I've told my veterinarian FIL many times that I think my filly is small. He always shrugs me off and says she will grow...or not... and not to worry. But, he saw her the other day and joked that I may have been sent Shetland pony semen. Way to make me not worry... What do you think? Is she too small? She's just over 13hh, and of course her pasture mate dwarfs her. Does she look okay besides being tiny? Has anyone had experience with them growing more as a 2 or 3 year old? My first time raising one, if you can't tell... Thanks for any advice!

Location: Georgia | I measured my March 2014 filly last week and she was 13.1. They all grow at their own pace. I was worried about mine for a while but I've decided it doesn't do any good to worry. Just feed them right and pray lol.

At the moment, she's turned out with a supplement block or tub. I give them grain periodically, but not every day. Maybe I should bring her to the house and feed her up more??? I did feed her until just a couple of months ago, but I couldn't keep everyone at the house, so kicked her out...

| My sister had a mare that grew sporadically until her 6 year old year. I think she finally topped out at 15./15.2. Your filly is really nice. She looks very well put together. They are like your kids, you can't help but worry, lol |

Location: stray dump capital of the world | My 16 year old horse was TINY as a yearling and probably 2 year old. I was freaking out that he would never grow. Dang thing shot up to be 16 hands when he set his mind to it. I wouldn't worry. |

| She's not tiny :). And her body condition looks good. I raised one colt I was very paranoid about being little, because some others bred like him had been small, so I measured him compulsively, LOL!!!
He was 13 hands as a yearling. 14.1 as a two year old, 14.3+ a little as a three year old and reached his mature height of 15.2 late summer of his 4 year old year.
It's so hard to be patient waiting for them! |

I wouldn't worry---I think she is cute as a button and will be fine. |

| Her body condition looks good. It may be her pasture mate is really big and she may be on the smaller side, either way she looks good. |

| One of the horses I ride was only 12.2 hands as an almost 2 year old. Now he's 14.3 hands at 3 years old and he grew every inch of that since January. haha He grew like a weed, and is starting to grow out so he's thick too. He was a may baby, plus was stunted as a weanling due to malnutrition, but it didn't stop him. |

Location: At the race track with Ah Dee Ohs | I wouldn't worry. My now 2 year old looked like a pony as a yearling. She took a growth spurt over the winter and she's now in the barn being broke and has grown even more since we started the process. She's nice size now. |

Location: Texas | My "tall" yearling is only like 14.1 or 14.2 at this point. He string tests to 16+ hands, which I believe because he's a firewater ta fame. He is all legs. My first down french yearling is a lot thicker, but she may finally be at 14 hands at the withers.. haven't checked. I think she's growing right now but for a while she was short. I'm not worried about it.
You want to see some early maturing yearlings, go to the race yearling sales and holy crap they are big! |

Location: IN MY OWN LITTLE WORLD AT LEAST THEY KNOW ME HERE | She's a baby.
She will grow till 5 or 6.
Imo all yearlings, to me, are at a ugly hound dog stage.
That's when their bodies start to really changing n stages and maturing.
Looking good now then next month ugly gangly and then back to looking good.
Down hill sloped one month the adult head w baby body and back to filling out and hopeful :0)
So with that being said enjoy watching her be an changling :0)
my dad always said you just never know what you got till 6.
My 3 yr old was a tiny delicate little bit and like you thought I had a midget on my hands. And some more ugly in conformation.
He is now a 15.1 hand big boned goober :0)
She's a pretty baby :0) enjoy her :0)))

Location: Missouri | Thank you for the responses! I have seen a race yearling and was astonished! He was giant and beautiful (and not sunburned!) I know logically mine won't look like that, but it made me really nervous that I was doing everything wrong! Also, my FIL doesn't feed his up, but all seem bigger than mine... Her mom is 15.2, I've seen dad and he was smaller, but I think close to 15h.
Her pasture buddy is 5. I swear he's still growing, but I got him at 2 and he was already huge! He's 16hh, just big all over! He's not had shoes yet, but farrier says he'll take a size 2! They're a very odd couple!

Location: Texas | I had a horse that was small. When he turned 2 I measured him at 14 hands, and he was so tiny. Very narrow also. I'm 5'6" and I felt like a giant on him. He did grow.... slowly. He was still growing at 5 when I sold him and he had just hit 15 hands and had started really filling out. By the string test he still had an inch or two to go. I'll never know if he made it to what the string test said, but he got pretty dang close anyway. |

| I've known some bloodlines to grow slow. I bought a prospect who was suppose to be 15.1, hes 14.3 but still downhill so hoping he gets bigger. Hes 4 but those closely related have grown until as late as 7! |

Location: Idaho | I wouldn't worry too much! My colt was tiny as a yearling.. people thought he was a weanling! Even as a 2-3 year old he was barely 14 hands.. I was scared that he wasn't going to top out over 15 hands.. he is now 4 years old and stands 15.2 and is still growing lol |

Location: MD | they grow in stages. my youngest was "stuck" at 15 hands and I thought that was it for him. I was excited to finally see him all "finished" sure enough 7 months later he started growing again at 5 yrs old and shot up to 15.3 in only a few months. |

| My yearling might be 13hh lol. She is a daughter of Tomahawk N Firewater out of a daughter of Special Effort. Her daddy is supposed to be around 15hh but her momma was short. As long as she hits 14hh, Ill be happy. She is probably 3/4 the size she should be but she looked like a bad rescue case when I got her at 6mos. Long story..... If you ever buy from a certain ranch in BFE in OK..... make sure you get a vet check on an older horse or buy a weanling.... because they don't receive anything but wormer outside of feed. Grrrrrrrrr |

I'm anxious..........I know his dam and I own a half sister out of dam. The breeder told me he wasn't going to get very tall but he was going to be really wide................
