What has been your experience with injecting adequan into the joint, with HA?

Don't have any personal experience as my vet refuses to do it to my horses as adequan has a high infection rate, when it first came out IA it was 50% infection rate.

My vet says he has done it to horses who were going to be euthanized and had success with it.

very interesting. we used it once on a fetlock. had great results. went over a year without needing injecting again. used it again... and had a bad reaction. had to flush the joint, antibiotics, inject with HA and bute for a couple days. still anxiously awaiting a little fluid pocket to disappear. Wondered if others had any similar experience.

I have never heard of it causing infection and I've used it since it came out and actually, my vet was the one that did all the testing on it and I never heard him say anything about infection rates being high if injected into the joint, although that was not what it was originally designed for. It was originally designed for IM administration, although I've had many friends who have had it injected into a joint by other vets and have had no problem. I have one friend whose horse gets it about twice a year in the joint. She swears it lasts longer than HA. You can get an infection in the joint no matter WHAT you inject.

he was injected 7/15 HA, adequan, vetalog. 7/23 had significant swelling. took him in to lameness vet B. he had blood in the joint. we flushed with saline and injected HA. he believes he had a reaction to the adequan. white cell count was low/normal.
lameness vet A, believes that it was not a reaction to the adequan but trauma to the joint. He said even with reaction to the adequan and inflammation of the joint; his white cell count would be elevated in the joint. took an x-ray. it was normal.
Any thoughts?

Joint flare, vets should do a culture, and a protein count
