Location: Georgia | I'm no stranger to the breeding business, but this is a new discovery to me. I have a 6 year old mare that I'm currently riding. She's never been exposed to a stud, she's maiden, and currently turned out in a pasture by herself. Great fences and no studs in the area... Ok my concern. I was getting ready to ride this morning, going through my usual routine of brushing when I noticed she seemed swollen around her groin/utters. I felt them and they were somewhat warm to the touch, a little hard, and leaking a cloudy liquid. She's not running a fever and the liquid didn't have a yellow tent or a foul smell. Is it normal for a mare to randomly bag up during their monthly cycle? Normally I ride geldings, but this is a home grown mare that I'm training. I'm very familiar with mare care and breeding but this is a new one for me.
I have a call in the my vet but it may be a day or two before he gets back with me. |

| Let me know what your vet says. I have a mare that I purchased as a 4 year old that's now 5 that had a run in with a stud as a 2 year old and birthed as a 3 year old. She still has a bag and when she cycles it gets pretty big an she still has quite a bit of milk. |

I will. She's never been bred so that was a concern for me. I know how quickly my brood mares bag up and how to care for them but not a maiden mare with a half full bag! |

Maybe she wanted I be a heffer instead of a horse |

Location: Idahome | Find something to help balance out her pituitary gland. This is what controls her hormones and it sound like it may be out of balance. I like the products from Silver Lining Herbs and I know they have a product for that. |

| I have a mare that bags up about once a year. Vet says she wants to be a momma. Also we have had mastitis so bad around here this year. Horses that are not bred have it. Don't know the cause. My broodmare has had it off and on since February. She lost her foal and is not bred right now and I just got it cleared up. I kept giving her SMZ until she cleared up. |

My mare's bag abscessed twice. One time the abscess was way up between her teats. When it ruptured it dripped puss which ran down her teats and looked like she was dripping milk. Obviously there was some kind of infection but may or may not have been mastitis. The second time it ruptured I really don't think it was mastitis. It dripped puss out of the front of her bag. |

Location: Georgia | Spoke with my vet yesterday and his opinion was it could possibly be white clover, this extreme heat/humidity we're having in GA, and/or it could be her cycle. He also mentioned that some mares just want to be momma's(which was also mentioned by another BB), but I'm not ready for that! He said to stay off of her til she dries up and then restart her training. I did notice when I rode her last she was rather sour. Hope this information helps with anyone else experiencing this! Location: Tennessee | I have a mare that has bagged up this year as well. She has never been exposed to a stud either. You can "milk" her. She looks almost like a gelding at first glance. She's not sore or anything. It hasn't affected her riding at all. She doesn't act out of the ordinary either. I wonder if it is the clover. I had never heard that. My other mares haven't bagged up though. |
