I have a horse that has been stomping like crazy bc of the flies. He's also barefoot and a total wimp who is needing a new set of shoes. I have tried packing his hooves with goo which I can not recall the name of just for a little relief on a few occasions. I follow the instructions but for some reason it ALWAYS squishes out and slides back and ends up a gooey mess near the bulb of his heel and gets in the hair there and is just generally unpleasant. With his abscess history I'm a pro at hoof wrapping (or so I thought). I don't know what to do!

Stomping at the flies is not the cause... It is the symptom/result.... You are treating the wrong thing... Get rid of the flies or let him out where he can escape them...

Oh I will DEFINITELY be getting some of those leggins when I get paid! Since I board and *nobody else* does anything for fly prevention, I can't get rid of them! Only cover him from head to hoof in mesh. All in the fly spray in the work doesn't make a dent unfortunately. I'm not using magic cushion, because they were out when I needed to buy some a while back, but it's kinda similar. I've tried a diaper wrapped in vetwrap wrapped in duct tape, and I've also tried the packing with a piece of paper stuck to the packing (like how you do for poultice) wrapped in vetwrap wrapped in duct tape. Every time it migrates. Sigh. I'll have to try again.

maybe bite the bullet and invest in good hoof boots?? I would spray my entire horse area with tempo too.....maybe you could get the rest of the board buddies to pitch in for a jug (cheapest place in bismarck is farm and home) and a sprayer and spray the entire premises a couple times a month-makes a world of difference! Tempo is safe and very effective and a little bit goes a long way.
