My 3 year old especially when she's in deep ground or muddy soil you can notice that her left hock rotates out or bends out slightly and her foot rotates quite a bit. I don't think she's cow hocked but I do notice this. I don't really notice her right one doing much at all. Is this a bad trait to have or am I doomed to have something that's going to sore up easily or not make a good barrel horse? Anyone have experiences with this...if you can understand what I'm talking about. ?

She is. He wasn't worried about it. I don't notice it much when she's turned out in the pasture..but if someone else rides her and I watch her move..I really notice it more. and It's been muddy here and my husband was riding her for me because I'm a chicken getting on a 3 year old and I really noticed it in deep wet ground that it really wanted to twist to the outside and her leg rotated.

We have a horse that does this in both hind legs. He's built pretty funky though, a little cow hocked and sickle hocked. He's 11 (I think?) and was used as a turn back horse for a long time and never had any soundness issues.
Also had a TB mare that did this in her hind right leg. She'd had a starting gate injury so most likely was from that, you could see her right butt cheek wasn't as muscled. She never had any issues either.

I'm just wondering if a trailer shoe might be in order here for extra support. Those add some torque but I can't remember how. Maybe some of the farriers here that are current on that type of work will chime in.

One of mine rotates a lot when she walks with her hind legs. She is almost sickle hocked IMO too. She gets injected every 8 months for hocks and i wouldn't consider her needing any special maintenance. I think it looks weird though, but what can you do about it... At this point she's 14 and is still running sound.

I have one that does that. Have had him for 12 years. He has had six different farriers put shoes on him --- always does this. He has never had his hocks injected. He conformation is fine. I had a girl at a barrel race tell me all the things I needed to do to him so it is pretty obvious. You don't fix something that ain't broke.
