Is it a correct assumption that any horse listed with a "0" or "Private" price is over $20K?

I wouldn't ever assume.. you never know. If you are seriously interested in the horse at a realistic price, I would message or call for a price. They can't really complain for getting a lot of calls when they left a very important detail out of their ad, IMO.

No, I've called on many of them and had them be very reasonably priced...just not what I was looking for at the time for one reason or another.

Not always!!
I know some people find it annoying when people don't post prices but all you have to do is message or email them to ask them their price. If they are going to put $0 on an ad they better expect a lot of messages or emails from people!
Not everyone needs to know what a horse sells for. It protects the seller and also the buyer. IMO its up to the buyer to disclose what they paid to other, its no one elses business.

I usually assume that A), it's out of my price range or B), they are asking more than the horse is worth and I don't give those ads a second look, but that's just me. I don't really get the jist - other than they don't want everybody to know what they are asking. To me, it's sort of like advertising a car with no price., (and when I see car ads like that, I usually figure they are wanting too much too)!

No, I have a mare that is for sale through another individual, as I was hoping I wouldn't have to handle buyers and questions, and she is listed as "Private Treaty".  I have no idea why they listed her that way, as my asking price was only $10,000 and she is advertised on their facebook page at that price or slightly under as well.  If she doesn't sell in the next couple of weeks, I have decided i'd bring her home and just enjoy her.  My goal was to sell her so I wouldn't have to take out a loan to repair my AC unit that I had to replace, but already had to do that.  If she comes home, i'll probably relist her and my 2 YO and whichever sells first, i'll keep the other, but she's too dang nice to just give away or discount for the sake of needing to sell.

Nice horse Herbie!

Well, guess I will have to start sending messages and asking prices then.  (Personally, I just wish they would list the prices.)

Just because it was listed for that price doesn't necessarily mean that's what they got for it!!!!!! IMO
I usually skip right over those ads!!!!

Me too, Tbone!  When I saw they'd listed my mare that way I just sighed and rolled my eyes.  I don't care who knows what I sell a horse for, big or small.  And thank you for your kind words, she is a very nice mare.  There's part of me that hopes she doesn't sell!  LOL  But then the 2 YO is equally cool, so really a tough call either way.

my thought is why put private treaty when you will lose a potential buyer or three. by putting the price you will not lose potential buyers only eliminate having to deal with those who can not afford your horse

Different prices for different people.  I know some folks who do that; they'll price cheaper to futurity riders or people they know will best showcase their horse or their brand, then charge 'average Joe's' more money.  That's not bad - it's their decision and their horse.

Sometimes people don't want their local people to know the price so they don't have to deal with the negative or catty comments.

Also, if there's no record of price you can't hold them to it.

There are lots more reasons; some already mentioned.

I typically skip the "0' price ads, as do lots of people; it's never in the sellers best interest to withhold the price, but that's their choice.  They are cutting out a large audience of buyers who may have shown interest otherwise.

I'm not sure if the person you're selling the mare through is getting any money out of the sale...but if they are, then they've most likely put it as private treaty to tell potential buyers more than your asking price, that way they get more money out of it. (I've been in this situation, bought a horse for a certain price through a consigner, talked to the owner about the price a few months later and the consigner upped the price about 5k from asking and never told the owner.... )

I pray that isn't your situation!!!

I may list one in the next couple of days and his price will be Private Treaty. He is a very nice 1D horse in tough competition but priced WELL under what many of his caliber have brought. He's sound, easy to ride and fun but for the buyer and sellers sake, the whole world doesn't need to know what he will sell for. It is important that we find the right jockey and a good fit. If I upset a few people by keeping it between the buyer and I, that's ok, most people who are seriously interested in a higher end horse will be thankful for the fact not everyone will know what their new horse brought. Just my opinion...

Honestly, I get a person's thought process behind not placing a price on a horse. I just don't really understand "doing it". In the end, a price, any price will in some way, be attached to the sale. By not attaching a price at the onset, both buyer and seller are just going to have more gossip surrounding the whole ordeal.

Interesting. If you set a price, you have an open contract with anyone that wants the horse.

It's not, she's openly advertised on their facebook page with a price and has been the entire time. But yes, that definitely does happen when we allow others to sell horses for us and I too know of these specific incidences.

As a buyer I skip the ads because I too think the horse will be out of the range I'm looking for or over priced.

As a seller, who has that kind of time to go through all the "price" emails. If you get 100 emails or texts asking for price you may not get one real interested buyer.

I see why some people don't want their sale information out there but it's the horse world it gets out there anyway. The only info people will see is the list price not the sale price.

Haha list and sale price are rarely the same number, so not sure what people are worried about.
