I am sure this has been asked 100 times...and I did a search but did not really find what I was looking for, so forgive me if I am asking a repetitive question. (I promise to not do it often!!)

So, we are looking to relocate. We feel like we can make more money elsewhere and property prices for the kind of land we are looking for is pretty much unaffordable here. (Central Florida) I have family in Houston but that is not really somewhere I want to settle down, we recently went out to Bowie and Kaufman, and I really enjoyed some of the smaller towns around Dallas. I work in the healthcare field so I need to be near a city. My other half is a highly skilled diesel mechanic and needs a more industrial area.

Obviously, barrel racing is important to me and I would like to be in or near an area where there are a good amount of arena's around. I am also an avid trail rider and would enjoy being within a reasonable hauling distance of some nice trails.

I ran barrels in Waco when I was a kid and we stayed somewhere on the outskirts of town, I cant remember the name of the town but it was neat, lots of dirt roads and a pretty big cowboy church. What do you guys think of Waco? Dallas? Any other towns that you think I should look in to? I would prefer to stay within a few (ish) hours of my family in Houston.

Thanks for the advice! and info!

I am also open to Louisiana, if anyone has any advice for towns around there.

The Waco area is pretty good. There are two major hospitals in Waco. Within an hour of Waco there are quite a few barrel races. As far as for your other half the diesel mechanic field is ok. Holt caterpillar is typically hiring as well as Rush peterbilt. There also a Kenworth house south of town. The cost of living is not crazy either. If you want any info just PM me.

North of Dallas is awesome. Near Denton or even McKinney area I live about 30 minutes north of Denton off of i35 and we literally have barrel races every night of the week within 30 miles. And Denton is a good size city to work in

Best hospital in Dallas is Baylor downtown and I know a lot of folks that work there and live out south like Waxahachie or east like Kaufman or Terrell. 175 is also a pretty easy commute for them at least for now. DFW is growing so quickly it wont matter what direction you go and it will be bumper to bumper.

Bumper to bumper does not sound like fun but I figure that's what I am going to get no matter where I go. :(

I figured he would be the easiest one to find a job for out there.

I live in Pilot Point, which is north east of Denton about 10 miles. Literally there is a barrel race to go to EVERY night of the week within 60 miles (typically within 30 miles). It's not a bad drive to either Dallas or Ft. Worth, and Denton is pretty big, too.

Awwww Houston is not that bad. I live south about 35 miles. Drive to med center only 40 minutes if you leave early. Great money in the healthcare field around med center, I make about $35-40k MORE than if I worked anywhere else in the city. Dow and all the other plants are 15 minutes from me. The extra money I make helps me afford the horses!

San Antonio also has a huge medical center off of I-10. There are many surrounding areas that you can look at and there are plenty of barrel races.

I live right between Kaufman and Canton(east Texas) and love it out here.  Beautiful sandy loam soil.  There are plenty of barrel races within 30-45 mins pretty much every weeknight.  Getting to the big races in Glen Rose, Stephenville, Alvarado, Waco and Oklahoma is an easy drive.  I have lived all over the state of Texas except for far West Texas and far South Texas. North and Central Texas have the best barrel races by far.  If you are from Florida you are very used to humidity and it can get grueling in the summertime here but a huge part of the year it is really nice to live in Texas.  The land prices in north and west DFW are going to be higher.  If you go south or northeast of Dallas you will get into black gumbo. STAY FAR, FAR AWAY FROM IT.  It is horrible for horses. Our land prices east of Dallas(50-60 miles east) are very reasonable but I can see that changing in the next 5-10 years.  Dallas has actually run out of new and used houses because of the HUGE influx of people moving here from especially California.  North Dallas has been booming with new big companies coming in so houses are scarce.

I am NW of Fort Worth about 45 minutes. Barrel races galore, property taxes not bad, rural living - peaceful and "town" is handy. Plenty of medical options within a 45 minute drive and 30 minutes with out much traffic and industrial as well.

Good luck on relocating.

Azle.  Close to Ft. Worth, Eagle Mtn Lake, close to Teskey's, barrel races everywhere, and it's hilly and beautiful.  I live just south of the Red River on I35 in horse central, but I wish I was closer to Ft. Worth, but that's because I'm single.  Land is cheaper up here, but when I buy a place I want to be further south.

Waco is a great little city with very few traffic jams. Multiple hospitals there and Scott & White at Temple is only about 30 minutes south of Waco. The Dallas/Ft. Worth area is always under road construction and always a traffic jam. You can look at real estate on landsoftexas.com to get an idea of real estate prices in any given area.

I love the Fairfield, Hillsboro, Corsicana area. Tons of barrel races and you are in between Houston and Dallas.

It is terrible.  When it dries it is like a very hard clay.  Trying to get it out of your horses' manes, tail or feet is a nightmare.  I dealt with it growing up and never again.

Are these small towns? Where would you look for work if you lived here?

I have lived in Austin/Elgin; Brady :( and now live in the Bryan College Station area.  I really like it where I am and don't have to drive very far to go anywhere.  I am 30 minutes from Highway 6 and Highway 45 so I can go in either direction.  Love it.

I think you'll like anywhere around North/Central Texas.  We live 30 min south of Fort Worth and love it.  Tons of barrel races, and just a fun place to be.

I'm glad you found your way back to civilization. I sure wouldn't want to live where you were last.
