Hi I have a 5 yr old futurity horse and we entered a barrel race In a colder state then we are use to we are always in the 100s. And this barrel race will be in the 40s and night and 70s in the day I have an outside pen is there anything I can do to help him adjust quickly? Do I change his diet before I leave to grass hay or does he need to be on protein ro help him? I know blankets ect I just want to see if there is anything else I can do or give him to help him adjust thank you so much for any suggestions I really appreciate it. He doesn't do good in indoor stalls so I have to keep him outside

No feed changes other than an extra block of hay .......... look for the brand name BAKER SHEETS ... they come in two plaid colors .. are breathable since all he needs is a little warmth containment .. during the night time ..

I only use them in the winter time if I am trailering a horse to an event or vet etc etc to cut down any breezy air that might chill the horse .... of course I am also one to believe a horse's winter coat of hair is better than all the blankets you can put on one ...

BAKER SHEET ...

My advice:  don't get bucked off when he starts celebrating the nice cool air.

Protein doesn't regulate body temperature. Just feed extra hay. Forage is how a horse maintains body heat. Just take a little extra time to warm up if it's cold out and you will be fine.
