Anyone care to explain the differences? Please include "Twisted", "Smooth" "Dr Bristol" and "Chain". I actually own these bits but now am second guessing which mouthpieces to use on which horses
The more breaks you have in a mouthpiece, the more bend it will give you. Less breaks, the more 'stiff' it will be. (Taken from a BHN article done on bit selection)
Twisted just gives you more bite than the smooth. Dr Bristol gives more bend and conforms to the mouth more. Chain has even more breaks and really conforms to the mouth. I've found chains to be good for a decently soft mouthed horse that may still need some bend and flex.
I've used L&W and Carolina Bit versions of the Simplicity. My L&W is a smooth lifesaver. My CB is a Dr Bristol. I like them both. I'm not a huge fan of the regular broken mouthpieces anymore now that I've used the 3 piece & chain. I ordered the Dr Bristol custom in June. My 13 year old been there done that gelding can get heavy on the bit at times so I like the twisted there to back him off if needed. My other gelding works really well in the smooth lifesaver.
