Location: NC | Hi, so for the past few years local people have been taking their horses swimming in a bay on long island, ny. Well last Thursday while there we were asked to leave by a park ranger. A few residents complained and because it is illegal the ranger had to come out and enforce it. $200 fine per horse if done again. The thing is we live on an island and the only beach we are allowed to bring the horses to is a beach on the ocean and only Nov-may. We pay enough in taxes that we should be able to have at least a beach to bring the horses too. Everyone cleans up and leaves the place cleaner then when arrived.
A person has started a petition to let us have one beach for horses. (dogs are not allowed on any beach except off season) If anyone would like to sign it, here the link:
https://www.change.org/p/suffolk-county-department-of-parks-recreati...
Thanks in advance!!!!
(edited to add we only go on a weekday t-thur and after 6 pm)

It matters not to me, I just always find issues of this type interesting. |

Thank you to everyone that signed!!! Its actually 1 or 2 people older people that have complained. The same type that when your horse poops in front of their house when walking down the road they come out screaming. Its also not a very populated beach, more of a hidden gem. Still a county beach though, although people who live there use it as a private beach, which is probably why they are complaining.
For an update one of the county legislators is going to try and hold a meeting with some of the people plus the parks department in hopes to get us some beach. Its sad that we are surrounded by water and still can not go on beach, unless winter time.
As for special interest superseding the people that dont like it, we all pay high taxes why cant we enjoy it with the horses? Long Island is one the most expensive places to live and suffolk county (which is where the beach is) is the highest. Theres also alot of horses on here per square foot. Not alot of public places to ride either. A few parks thats it. |

Devils advocate here.
Big annual horse show. They show up at the county owned facility and want to go for a walk in the arena.
They pay taxes

Yes they may pay taxes but that means someone is paying to rent the facility for that time. Whoever is hosting the show is paying a good amount so no, no one should walk around. No one is paying to rent a beach. Just because they live there doesnt mean its their private beach. Yes people do have private beaches, but this is county owned. Like i said if they can find one beach on the island it would be nice.
Thank you again to everyone that has signed!! |

 Having Smokin Bandits

Location: Woodstown, NJ | I was happy to sign. I grew up in a little town in New Jersey not far from a beach like that on the bay and we used to ride our ponies there. Some people would come out and take pictures, they loved watching it so much. It brings joy to people, even if you don't ride. What do these old farts have nothing better to do? What would they rather a bunch of hoodlums drinking beer on the beach or how about if someone builds some more condos? We have enough problems in the world, for people to be complaining about this.... Good grief! |
