How often do you do and what do use?  I picked everything off that I could about two weeks ago and now there is build up again.  More flaky than clumps, but still build up.  Is it safe to use soap in that area or just water and hands?

I just use water and hands. Amazing how quickly the gunk builds up.

Yes it is safe to use soap. If nursing rinse well. Cleaning with soap and drying allow longer times between cleaning. I just clean them every time I ride. which sometimes is a daily thing.

I use water and hands but have used soap if washing them down. Just rinse well or junk will build up faster.

I use a sheath cleaner on my mare, both teat and wooha area. That stuff really loosens the gunk that's built up. Then rinse it off when I'm done.

Excalibur (the stuff for sheaths) should work pretty good.

My mare, back during the active season, would get a bath once a week before every weekend run, and I would always do some cleaning on her teats and where the sweat builds up between her back legs with warm soapy water. She loves it, it must itch sometimes because she will do the lip thing and everything while you scrub her down there.

(Now, when she foals as a maiden in 2017, if she still feels the same about a baby jerking on her, that may be another story. haha)

I always used blue dawn dish soap and warm water...I use to do it every week...then finally gave up because so much crud would build up in so little time lol

I just use water and hands, and I clean it every time I rinse her down after a ride. It's much easier that way, because at that point it's just a little bit of dirt or sand from the arena. :)

With CC's bladder stone issue I got used to cleaning her basically everyday just with my hand and then once a week with dawn dish soap. When we were at UCD before she went in for the ultrasound I reached up and checked her real quick and the student standing there freaked out thinking CC was going to kick...nope, she hikes her leg for it, LOL!!!

I have gotten to where I keep baby wipes in the barn all the time. They come in so handy for stuff like this.

Warm Water with baby Shampoo, or dawn soap works really well and is super gentle on them :) Make sure to wash off any soap on the surface with fresh warm water after cleaning the area. I do this pretty often usually every other week.

My more reaches around and tries to bite me when I try to clean. Baby wipes sounds like a good idea though as she doesn't like water there either, tries to kick. She is just really a hormonal mare and quite bossy.

I use soap. A bucket of soapy water and a sponge. Rinse well. I get a squeal and a kick (or at least a foot stomp) whenever I clean that area, though. The baby wipes are a good idea. I might try that and see if she is just not liking the water.

I just use water and my hand to get the basic stuff off when I rinse my mare off most days. Once a week its nice to use a gentle cleaner like excalibur or dawn.
