What do you do when you haul a young horse to exhibition to keep their attention and help them get past all of the scary things in the pen? Especially for a pretty nervous one, even though he has been hauled a bit. Extra long warm up? Just don't give them the opportunity to be scared when you go in to exhibition? Just lope your first exhibition and kinda push them right off the bat? Or do you trot your first exhibition, let them have a look around and then go on?

I keep it to a trot until they calm down and are ready to go faster. Especially in the beginning I don't want them to mess up and have to school on them. I don't want them associating hauling with a whole lot of schooling. IF they are very nervous I give them In the Zone by Animal Element which keeps them relaxed and focused.

I exhibition more than once when first taking them...and I spread the exhibitions out so I might do 3 with same horse but not one right after the other maybe get a few people in between so it's not constant time in arena but time in and out then back in...and nd I go slow first couple times like walk and trot and let them look at scary stuff while I do pattern but by last exhibition I like to be loping atleast...

are you able to get an open arena before exhibitions? Most races in my area allow open arena. I have a colt I'm hauling who can be extremely spooky. I always use about 30 minutes of that time in the open arena trotting loping, and showing him it's not scary. Then he's just fine when it comes time to my exhibitions.

A lot of the times unfortunately it's not open arena. I really wish it was, because then I feel like we would be fine. I'm thinking about trying the In the Zone paste. I feel like he's been hauled enough now he should be starting to chill, but he's really not.

I've been using Vita-calm for my gelding, actually works and it's pretty cheap.

Do you feed it every day or before you haul?

At what age does everyone start hauling your young horses just to see the sight?

We started hauling our 3yo as a long yearling to barrel races with us. I would pony him during the open arena and just let him look around. Now as a 3yo, we take him everywhere and he doesn't bat an eye.

I don't like to ride in the pen before exhibitions. I also don't like to trot. I think they learn faster to focus when they know they're going in to do their job. I lope on in and may trot around the barrels but make them lope in between. I don't even walk up the alley until my exhibition. I want them to know every time they go up the alley its to work the pattern.
