If a person is feeding 3rd cutting alfalfa at a tested 20 percent, and it's in the large bales, just how much of it would you feed a horse per feeding? Horses are also on free feeding of local hay. I just do not want them getting to much protein per feeding.

We feed Alfalfa only and feed 1 big flake a day(1/2 each feeding) Works out to about 20 lbs per day.

I'm not sure of the technical answer, but typically we feed a flake morning and night off a regular square bale. This is when they don't get pasture, with pasture only 1 flake. I couldn't tell you a weight, but I try to feed it in a ratio of 1:2 parts grass hay.

We feed alfalfa and feed based in the weight and activity level of the horse. I would say an average for us is 20lbs per day split into two feedings. With small squares we can measure a little easier because the bales average 60lbs. I don't like to feed youngsters an all alfalfa diet, so we will split up the feedings between alfalfa and grass hay (if they aren't turned out to grass pasture). Where yours are on another source of hay as well they shouldn't need as much alfalfa.

I've fed alfalfa before, just have never gotten it in these very large bales and with 20. Percent protein--which is a lot of protein. Thank you gals...

How big of a bale?  The BIG ones. (6 stringer) I would feed 1/4 of a "flake".

I believe they are 4X4x6. Suppose to have 21regular size bales in each one.

I think you can convert the alfalfa per lb to grams, 454grams/lb, and then calculate how much protein there is in each lb, then determine how many lb's it would require to give the necessary grams per day. I want to say a 1100lb horse needs 900-1000 grams of protein a day... but i'm not 100% sure.

So quick little math would be

10lbs alfalfa = 454x10=4540 grams

4540 grams x 20% protein = 908 grams of protein in 10lbs alfalfa...

Maybe
