I am getting back into barrel racing after taking a break for a few years. I just got a horse that has some history of gymkhana but I dont think he was every really seasoned, so Im just starting from the ground up.
Im boarding my horse at a place that only has a small turnout/arena and was wondering what kind of slow work/exercises I could do in a small space. I also have a full size arena that is about a 30 minute ride away, so Im planning on taking advantage of that a few times a week as well as trail riding. Any type of exercises in addition to small space exercise would be much appreciated as well!
Thanks!

You can do a lot of work / moves off the pattern that translate to the pattern. Once they know the pattern, it's a good idea to do most of your work off the pattern anyhow.
Rollbacks working on collection, working on transitions in speed - up and down- are all things you can do without a barrel.
I'll also set up a barrel and approach it from all different directions to get my horse listening. There's lots of drills that use 3-4 barrels in a line and other configurations that do the same thing.
