Location: Phoenix | My boyfriend is getting his wages garnished because the government claims he owes them $4000 for a travel order that was paid out twice. The date of the travel order is AFTER he was out of the Marines--there's no way he owes this money. He can't get ahold of anyone within the government agency, only the collection agency. He's faxed over documents showing how the travel orders can't have been intended for him. I want him to get a lawyer because this is BS but he's saying the cost of the lawyer would be more than we're trying to get back and not even worth it. I'm so frustrated that there isn't anyone he can talk to--every number goes to voicemail and nobody returns calls. Does anyone have any ideas? |

When did he get out? He should be able to go to JAG. However, if he has a garnishment, there's a darn good chance it's from something that he really does owe. |

Location: Phoenix | He got out in 2011. This appeared about a year ago. The travel orders were to a place that he's never been before. We're thinking it's a clerical mistake. They withheld his refund and now started pulling money out just now. A new phone number was listed on the bank transaction so maybe we can get answers on Monday. |

  Expert of all Expert...
Location: Arizona | Has he tried to contact DFAS (http://www.dfas.mil/customerservice.html)? Does he have any reference information regarding the alleged claim--orders number, claim reference number, other? There must have been some substational information in order for it to have been turned over to collections. |

Location: Carpenter, WY | Just my opinion, but if he isn't going to try any harder to get it fixed maybe there is something he hasn't told you?? I know if I was wrongfully garnished for that amount of money I'd sure be on the phone for as long as it took to get it removed |

This. I know it can be a huge pain in the rear to deal with those kind of things but it does seem strange to me that he isn't working his behind off to get that taken care of. I'm not going to say it never happens, but most of the time they don't get those kind of things mixed up. |

Location: Phoenix | I don't think he's withholding anything. I know he's been over to the east coast a bunch before we met but the date of this order is recent--after he was out. Thanks for the ideas--I will take them all to him. I know I'm annoying him with my over-concern, but I think he's in the mindset that he won't win. He knows it needs to be addressed, but he's run into a lot setbacks earlier on and became a little discouraged. He was getting a good back-and-forth with the collection agency communicating with whatever government agency it is and he submitted the paperwork he needed to, but then his case got transferred to someone else and they wanted him to start all over. The document they sent him that was supposed to be proof of his orders literally could have been typed on an Excel sheet. It honestly seems like a scam. I'm just mad that there isn't anyone we can actually get ahold of. He's going to spend a day this week sorting this out. There's a case number and new phone number we haven't tried so HOPEFULLY we get a competent human on the phone. **crossing fingers** |
