| Have a horse who was recently diagnosed with ulcers. Prior to this diagnosis his feed schedule was 1 scoop sweet feed 2X a day with hay... Am treating with the Omeprozole for next 10 days but want to change his feed as researching, horses with ulcers do not need to be on sweet feeds. He is on pasture and is only up to eat and then turned back out. Those of you who deal with horses with ulcers what do you feed and how. Thanks! ETA: He tends to be a picky eater as well!

| 1/2 pound Purina enrich, 1 pound max e glo which is rice bran and it has calcium carbonate also found in acid reducers such as neighlox and 1/2 cup marshmallow root and slippery elm 2x a day along with alfalfa and turnout. If I haul him I put hay in front of him bc the chewing helps reduce acid production |

Did he do studies proving his product cures ulcers, or is it all anecdotal? |

| My guess is no studies have been officially done and he is just getting results like a lot of other people. Sometimes if something just WORKS that is all the proof you need. Anytime you can change the quality of a horse's life without using drugs its a positive in my book. I don't need a piece of paper to know something works. Just my opinion. |

I agree. I had been giving Previcox daily for a year. She has always been ulcer prone. I am now 2 weeks into the Cur Ost and no Previcox and no ulcer symptoms. |

| While I don't know about the Cur Ost whatever stuff, it sounds like a lot of money for something with no studies behind it??
But:
Getting off the sweet feed is the most important thing, like you said. A good combination for ulcer prone horses is alfalfa pellets and rice bran. I feed mine 3 lbs alfalfa pellets 2X daily, and 1-2 lbs rice bran 2X daily.
I've had excellent luck with SmartPak's SmartGI Ultra. It's an excellent pH balancer and really helped to rehab a bad case I had last year.
The only thing actually approved and proven to work on ulcers is Merial's Ulcergard or Gastrogard (same product). You can treat a little more cheaply by feeding the whole tube of Ulcergard daily, just like you would Gastrogard.
I would also be giving probiotic paste 2X daily, half a tube.
The good bugs get burned up with an unsettled stomach and can lead to lots of issues.
I hope your horse feels better! |

| Is there any kind of ulcer supplement that can be fed every day? What do you guys think about the Exceed 6 Way 5 in 1 that does joints gastro oxygen etc? Would that help prevent ulcers? I'm asking because I was at a barrel race all weekend and my horse got upset from being in a stall where he couldn't see the horses next to him and he coliced last night. Doc said it's from being upset and the weather and he said he may have ulcers...he's never shown signs of having an ulcer.

There are some journal articles and some old research studies that show papaya can be given long term without and long term negative effects. Papaya has been shown to prevent as well as cure ulcers in the stomach |

Location: Oklahoma | ulcer meds are very expensive and even if you went the cheap route still high and doesn't fix the problem. I know of two people that say the ulcer meds are no longer helping their horses like it did before. These are super nice 1d horses too. I just know what is working for my horse. He was ulcery and I did the meds and he was turned out for 3 months and still ulcery doing nothing while on meds, I figured out it was grains that was making him that way as soon as I pulled the grains he made a huge change around and I havent had to treat for 6-8 months then he was diagnosed with copd and guess what he went on steriods because I knew of no other options well he started acting ulcery again and I only walked and slow trot and loped him no running barrels or hauling him. Then I came across the Cur-Ost and talking to Herbie and Flitastic decided to try within 5 days all his sypmtoms are gone and that is what is working for me. Good luck OP I know it can be very frustrating all we can do is share our experiences you just have to figure what works for you and your horse. just because there may not be studies or test that you think should be done doesn't mean that it doesnt work. I personally for me think it is a combination of feeding as natural as possible plue the cur-ost |

Agree with both posts. Mine was dx with 3 grade 1 and 1 grade 3 ulcers. Gastrogard 28 days - switched from Ultium to Renew Gold, we don't have regular alfafa hay here so I pay to get it from TS - feed 1 flake a day - I than add Aloe Vera Juice 1/2 twice a day and THE Gastroplus 1/2 dose twice daily JUST to be sure. When I haul I dose Ulcerguard day before, day of and day after. I will NOT change from this as it has worked for 10 months now and he looks awesome! |

I have just used the Total Support, and haven't used the Stomach at all. But I know of other people who have used the stomach only with great success. The main thing IMO is to change the diet to remove the contributors to the issue, like processed feeds or product with synthetic (man made) vitamins and minerals and be sure to feed the best quality forage you can get your hands on. |

Omni cubes, grass hay, whole flaxseed and Cur Ost.
Just an informational note here: Omnis already has whole flaxseed. If feeding Omnis at 8 lbs or more, I would not recommend additional flax seed.

It has been so hot and humid here that the horses are sweating by 10 am. I have 2 that are sweating more since I have added alfalfa to their diet so for now they are only getting 5 lbs. a day. When it finally cools off in November I will up it to 10 lbs and discontinue the flaxseed. But I do want to thank you for all the info you have given us about these cubes. I absolutely LOVE these cubes.
I just wanted add that I am feeding 2 additional ounces of flaxseed a day. If you think this is still too much, please let me know, Tdove.

Location: West Texas | First of all, thank you, GLP.
At 5 lbs of Omnis, you are fine adding the 2 ounces of flax. When you up that to 10 lbs of Omnis, then additional flax is not necessary. So, you are exactly correct.
If one was feeding 15 plus pounds (As we do), then additional flax would be discouraged, as the daily recommendation for flax is 4-8 ounces.

Location: North Dakota | Yeah sweet feed is junk food for horses. Horrible stuff. The most important thing is to make sure hay or grass is available 24/7. Sitting with no food in their bellies will only exaserbate ulcers. Some alfalfa along with the grass/grass hay is good because of its relatively high calcium content, it is thought to help counteract excess acidity in the stomach (much like taking tums for heartburn). It is important to avoid sugary/starchy feeds. I like Renew Gold and Progressive Nutrition feeds the best. Both are quality feeds with low NSC's, are fed at a relatively low volume and are completely safe unlike nutrena, ADM, and many other feed companies that also mill medicated cattle feed. Some people also add aloe vera juice and/or ulcer supplements to help keep them at bay. Some are definitely better than others, but you could definitely look into them to help with long-term maintenance.
ETA-If you can get the Omnis cubes that's definitely another good option. I would feed the heck out of those if they were available in my area!

I agree with Herbie. With Renew Gold you are just spinning your wheels if you don't feed it with Alfalfa. I had a bad experience with it but have figured out what went wrong. I now feed it with the Curost and Feed Alfalfa hay which is also great for ulcers. I would get powdered Omeprozole and feed it for a month at treatment level. Then at the maintenance and up it the day before a run. Cur Ost total support and add the adapt. The big thing with ulcer horses is stress. Feed also plays into it. No molasses and low starch are the suggested feed. I add Timothy hay free choice. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | Free choice hay, alfalfa pellets, rice bran or flax. Min 21 to 30 days omeprazole. If you want to try a supplement like THE, Forco or curost, do it but still treat with the omeprazole. If you are traveling, ranitidine given the day before days of and day after travel is a great, very affordable preventative. The big thing is the ulcergard, alfalfa, and free choice hay. |

Location: Willows, CA | One of the most often missed issues where horses have roughage available 24/7 but still have ulcers, is that just because they are standing on it, it does not mean that they are eating it 24/7. Be sure that your horses teeth are up to date so that they can chew comfortably. This means that they will chew as much as possible, and make the maximum amount of saliva while doing so. This along with the small amount of constant roughhage eaten is the natural buffer for stomach acid. When I see horses with ulcers that should not have them based on the diet that they have available, the issue is almost always a problem with teeth. |

I just started feeding Cur-ost 4 days ago and I am using the stomach along with the calm and adapt. I will say that my mare eats it great I just sprinkle on top of her soaked pellets and she digs in before I even get a change to mix it up. I have already noticed that she is eating much better and cleaning up her hay again. I might switch to the total after a while but for at least 60 days she will stay on this . |

Just a rough estimate, but you can keep your horse on THE GastroPLUS year round for around $1.50 a day. Pm me your email and I would be glad to send you before and after pictures. |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | I have had 2 with ulcers that would not stay on the type of feed that vets recommend - low starch, no grain. You can feed the best stuff in the world but if they won't eat it, it doesn't work. I have found that for whatever reason, even non-molassas beet pulp can cause them to go off their feed. The only thing I was able to feed both horses was straight grains, which is the last thing vets recommend.
If a horse can eat just hay, that's great but when you've got an appendix or OTTB that's just not enough to keep weight on. |

| We have a horse that stopseating when ulcers are back.
We have tried things.
What is working for us...
neighlox 1oz twice a day
Smartpak GI Ultra
Tribute Ultra Kalm feed
equine total gold oil 4 ozdaily
we treated with omeprazole/zantac paste for 30 days straight 3 different times and as soon as we stopped the paste the ulcers came back
we used Succeed paste daily and omeprazole/zantac paste day before day of and day after racing and ulcers came back
our horse lost so much weight
finally off omeprazole/zantac paste for 60 days without recurrence of ulcers
praying we finally have the right prevention in place
however, if we haul to 3 day shows we will probably still give omeprazole/zantac paste day before day of and day after
