Anyone have any horses that suck on their tongues?
I have three horses in my barn right now, and they 2/3 suck on their tongues like they're a dang pacifier. The gelding is mouthy anyway, he chews on EVERYTHING- but now he has the mare doing to it (I'm not sure if she had this habbit before she came or not). They're all turned out 24/7 on pasture, except twice a day when I stall them to feed.. When those two get done eating they'll hang their heads out of the stall and proceed to suck on their tongues. They're not nervous or anything, they both look as calm as can be, just sucking away.. Anyone else have a horse that does this?!
I had a gelding that did that and would also stick it out side of mouth and twirl it around.. I always thought it was from his plane trip over and he got bored and picked the habit up but maybe its a soothing thing instead.
It's a form of cribbing. I have a tongue sucker. He folds his tongue in half to suck on it and flaps his lips. It's amazing. The other gelding is also orally talented. He can open gates and halters and untie knots...

The gelding is one of the mouthiest horses I've ever met- he chews on anything he can find, his teeth show signs of that.
At least my horses aren't the only ones who do this then. I was thinking it was a comforting thing, but they like so relaxed and content when they do it.
