Okay sooooo....I have a 4 month old mini aussie pup. Lately, she has been pooping in her kennel at night. I've been giving her a treat when she poops/pottys outside, she gets fed twice a day and I always make sure to take her outside right before bed for 20-30 minutes...but she will not poop outside at night. No changes in her food, so I don't understand why. Her kennel is the right size and isn't too big. She doesnt whine or anything during the evening...just plops right there and poops.

Is she ticked at me because I put her in the kennel in the evenings? Or what?! I have no idea what to do now, I'm getting sick of cleaning it out every morning.

I would plan on spending more time outside in the evenings, until she does her business outside. And how long after her night feeding are you taking her out?

I am not a dog expert by any means, but maybe try feeding 1x per day, early in the day? I would guess that the later feeding is causing the problem of her having to go in the middle of the night..

I feed my dogs in the AM and I know if we get off schedule and I feed at night I usually have a surprise in the morning, and they are house trained.

I didn't think about that, how much are you normally feeding in the AM? I feed typically about 1 cup each feeding since she's a fatty.

Well, you don't have a choice. She can't go back inside until she poops. You know she has to go, since she goes in her kennel eventually.  You just have to be patient and wait her out.   Potty training is no picnic, just part of the process you have to go through.
good luck.

I've tried waiting it out, but she runs around and plays with the barn cats...I have a 3 year old I have to get ready for bed as well.....and can't exactly sit outside for 2 hours hoping she will poop. During the day I leave her outside since she won't stray, just too afraid to do it during the evening.

I would just feed 2 cups in the AM then. I feed a coffee can of dog food per day for 3 medium sized dogs and they eat it throughout the day. The mini aussie is super hyper, goes 90mph 24/7, and stays very lean so she gets 2 eggs in the AM as well.

I wouldn't feed a small puppy, that young, only once a day.  You are liable to get one that is not only pooping in her crate, but puking bile (sp) too because her stomach is empty for too long.

As others have said, you have to wait her out.  Have her on a leash so she CAN'T mes with the cats.  If she doesn't "go" after a certain amount of time, and you have to take care of your 3yo, bring her in and put her in her crate, then take her BACK out again later.  How long is it between when you feed her and when you take her out?

As in walk her on a leash to make sure she goes? I can do that.

I normally take her out 20 minutes after she eats.

Yes.  Take her out on a leash or long line and walk her around.  And, IMO 20 minutes isn't NEARLY long enough.  (As evidenced by the fact that she doesn't GO.  LOL)  I would wait closer to an hour.  (Unless you see her looking for a place to go before that.)  If you can get her on a schedule, and teach her to "go" on command, it will make your life a LOT easier.

I agree with the others.  Feed twice a day. Or feed her when  you have her out of her crate?  Also if you find out where she likes to go the bathroom take her on leash and tell her to go potty.   Puppys take time.......

Yep put her on a leash. Potty time needs to be just that and not play time with the cats.  Walk her out in some taller grass, don't just stand there and expect her to go.  get her moving and smelling and I bet that will help too.
You have to make the commitment to instill the right habits, maybe feed her 2nd meal a little bit earlier in the evening so that you have the time to spend.

Another question:  How long is she crated between the last time you take her out at night, and when you let her out in the morning?

I didn't realize she was so young, so disregard my comment! Racing QH seems to know what she's taking about!

Mine go out straight away after they eat.... Cole pooped in his crate a couple times too.... Take a small treat with you and the second she goes give it to her and praise her... Cade is smart... she'll catch on. Cole took about a week with treats to get it.

Im no expert either but I agree with racing.. a young pup needs fed small meals frequently , also realize it takes a few hours for it pass thru her gut .

When I've trained my pups to "go" outside, I also associated it with a verbal command. I would say "go potty" every single time they would begin to go, be it #1 or #2. And then PRAISE and say "good potty!", and pet and give a treat when they had completed. Lots of positive reinforcements.

My Husky knows the difference between when I say "pee pee" and "poo poo" and I can tell by how excited he gets which one we're going out for!! He needs tall grass for number 2. . . Who knows! And thank goodness he's pretty much on a routine for number 2 in the late afternoon, which makes life much easier. He always get a "good boy" when he does his business, and when we're out I'm constantly telling him "poo poo" so he doesn't forget what we're out there for. (I often wonder what the neighbors think hearing "Luca, poo poo" over and over and over. . . . . ) Good luck with getting your baby lined out.

well tried the leash last night, walked around at 9pm for half an hour...she thinks it's a game. I even took treats with me but she wouldn't potty or poop, just kept trying to sit or lay down when I stopped. I let her out of the kennel last night, and low and behold....woke up to a pile of it by the bathroom door.

I have been very lucky with the last few dogs (gotten them all as puppies) I have had.  The only time they will go in the house is if I totally am not paying attention or if they are sick.  I think in my case it has help a ton that I have older dogs that will show them the ropes.

The puppy I currently have has never tried to go potty in the house.  I have the mom and at night all the pups and mom would go in the little dog run we had and they would hardly go potty in there as I thought they didn't want to go where they slept.  I have brought Minnie with me to work a few times and I will take her out every couple of hours.  She will squat to pee as soon as I set her down and then walk to the grass and do number 2.  I always praise her.  If she stays in at night she will howl when she needs to go out and again as soon as she is out she will squat.

They are a lot like small kids.  Have your tried taking her out multiple times durning the night?  Do you have or can you set up a little fenced area that you can put her in to do her business at night so she can't chase the cats?

Can you set up a small fenced area for her to hang out in until she goes?  Maybe something temporary?  Take her outside again after you get your kiddo in bed?  Maybe she's not ready to go when you take her out the first time?

I've got a few ideas in mind, when I normally let her outside she has run of the property and always comes back....I just haven't had time to sit out there for as long as she is out to watch to see if she goes potty/poop. I have one of those teather things I can attach to the porch and put her on it at night.
