This is my first year headed west to a futurity. What's OKC like during this time of year and what are the must haves to bring for both horses and myself? We are coming from north-east. Is there anything special I need to know for first timers to make the trip smoother? We have plenty of miles on the open show road, just not on the futurity one... I'm nervous but excited at the same time.

Comfortable shoes for you and mats/shavings/softrides for the horses as everything is concrete.  You're probably going to want a tack/storage stall since the RV parking is a good ways from the barns.  If you're allowed to run a generator then the parking isn't too far off from the barns, but I'm not sure if they allow generators during the BFA.

The weather should be a walk in the park for you if you're coming from the NE!

Good luck!!!

I came from Minnesota so OK in the winter is a breeze. Once in a while you will get ice that is a pain in the you know what to deal with, but it usually one't last but a few days if that. Throw in a bag of kitty litter for traction if needed. Blankets are important as the weather does change on a dime here. It can be 70 and in an hour drop 30 degrees. The good thing is when cold weather does hit, it does not last long, but it can be a challenge for the horses unless you have the right sets, yes sets of blankets. You want light, medium, and heavy or a combination you can layer. What part of the NE are you coming from?

Ive never been, I just watch on simulcast. I have friends that compete every year and they have changed to rims on their horses before they go because the ground is always crap...I dont know what the ground is like where you are coming from...everyone down here seems to run in rims but I am in Texas...so it might be different for yall?

We're not as north as Minnesota! Lol I'm close to DC in the eastern panhandle of WV... Winters aren't as bad as where my family is from in Michigan but we still get that nasty ice and snow in mostly in the mountains. That's what I was curious as to what blankets to bring. I have them all plus my back on track and PHT sheets so they are a must. Thank you!

That's helpful to know! Thank you! Ground is like anywhere else, we have clay and sand pens plus good v bad days.. Im sorry that's pretty vague but ground is such a touchy subject for some people. We try to run on a little of everything.

I live in oklahoma and run at okc often. There sometimes isn't much dirt on top of the concrete. It's always different depending on how much dirt is hauled in. Nice facility. Make sure to have locks for your tack rooms, there have been break ins while people are parked there. Lots of concrete so if you have easy boots or some kind of boot to help make it easier to be on the horses being on concrete all week.
It can be 70 in December One day and the next windy and 30. And I am not joking! :)

Bring a fan for your stall, it can get warm in there if you are under a heater and a fan also helps to disperse germs and the urine stench those closed up buildings acquire in December.

I highly recommend putting your horse on an Immune supplement and treating with Equi-Stim before going. It's cold outside, hot inside and ventilation is severely lacking.
