Has anyone ever ripped out their fingernails? Entire finger nails, cuticle and all that? Wondering how long it will take to heal up..... Hubby and I were getting firewood cut and split. He was using the chainsaw and I was on wood splitter duty. Unfortunately, I was a bit too cozy with what I was doing and managed to have my hand behind the wood when I was splitting it. Long story short, I completely ripped out two finger nails and all the flesh around them. Possibly broken one finger tip. But that's alright. It's just hard to do much because the "nail" side is so tender. I've read 4-6 months to grow a nail IF it decides to grow back...

AHHH!!!!  that makes me hurt just reading it!!  Hope it's not giving you grief 24/7!

My husband ripped off half of his pinky nail a few months ago... I'd say it took 6-8 weeks at least for it to start growing back noticeably...

I'd start taking some biotin / hair skin and nails product!  best of luck!

Ouch, now that sounds painful!  I can't think of the name of it but there is a topical that will numb the pain and tenderness.

Lol, I attached pictures in case anyone's interested! The super red looking one is when it just happened and I had just clipped the pieces of cuticle holding the nail on. They were dangling by a hunk of side cuticle.

They don't hurt THAT much, surprisingly. Only if I bump them accidentally. But I'd really like to get on my horse without worrying about them getting knocked.

I would get ssd (silver sulfadiazine) cream and coat those suckers like mad. Neosporin, too. Wrap them when you're in a dirty environment, keep them open at night/sleeping. If the nail is going to grow back, it will definitely take a few months.
I would just worry about infection in the mean time.
Good luck and happy healing! I'm glad to hear you aren't in too much pain. I'd be interested to see if the nails end up growing back. Because it looks like you've ripped off your nail bed. But bodies do amazing things.

I ripped some nails off as a kid a couple times - think giant rock driveway hill, awesome big-wheel three wheeler, and no shoes.

It takes about 6 weeks to see growth (if there is gonna be growth).  I have a pinky toe that never grew back.  Oh and hit up a walgreens, they have this numbing stuff you can put on it.  Also, we used liquid bandage to keep it clean - the stuff works its way off every few days so you can air it out/ let it breathe and then reapply.

 Thank you, thank you.

I wondered if the liquid skin bandage would work. I've been keeping them wrapped up, but also know that at some point they need to be opened up to dry out.

i have no idea about the layers of skin or function for nail growth either. So I'm curious to see if they'll regrow. I am really hoping they do. I told my hubby, if they don't, I'm gonna have to buy the fake nails from wallyworld and glue them on :-)

6 months is about right. If you have part of the nail still It will grow as a double split nail. Might want to put a finger splint on as if it were broken to protect it

Never did a finger but have done it three times to toes. 4-6 months is about right. you should see new nail starting in about 3-4 weeks. Once the new nail starts try hoof maker it really does work and will cut down on the time to heal. Good Luck!!

I keep long nails so I've broken off nails before but never broken off a whole nail like that. I know how bad a half nail hurts I couldn't imagine a whole nail especially 2 at the same time. A friend broke her whole toe nail off and it took almost 4 months for it to start growning back normal. It will quit hurting before then though. Or at least hers did. She kept her toes painted and just painted the skin where there should have been a nail just so it would look normal. From a distance you wouldn't know the difference.

Lol, not a bad idea. I'll just paint my fingers.

I appreciate all the advice. I can't wait for them to stop being so tender. Last night, I knocked them in an effort to save corn on the cob from falling...but my fingers and the corn lost. I ripped off part of the healing skin. I about went into orbit. Bah...
