I'm asking because I just don't know. But when you are looking for horses to buy they will say futurity eligible. Or I see people saying to are going to futuritys with there young horses. How do you go that? Do you have to register them as a "futurity horse". Say I was interested in running a 3 years old with the top of the top how do you go about that?

Anyone can enter a futurity, the horse needs to be eligible by meeting age requirements (3 or 4 year old) and has not previously been entered in any race prior to entering the futurity.
There are futurities that are four year olds. To be eligible to run in those futurities, a horse must not have competed in any barrel race before December 1 of their 3 year old year. Entry fees are due long before the actual futurity. The BFAFuturity is for 4 year olds and is in December of the horse's 4 year old year. The entry fees for that start in January. You can run you horse in other futurities that year.
There are futurities for five year olds. In order for a horse to be eligible for these, the
horse cannot have competed in barrel race before December 1 of its 4 year old year.
Even though the rules for the futurities are very much alike, it is important to know the rules for each futurity that you want to enter and dates when entries are due.
