Love how Lockhart only went to 39 rodeos and some are at 97. Tells you that the horses she rides are a whole nother caliber!!! And her horses won't be dog tired and sore when the NFR gets there.

Some of the gals get invited to the high dollar rodeos that others don't get invited to.  Right?  Or do I misunderstand it.  I was under the impression that some of the girls HAVE to haul to twice as many or more rodeos as to get their foot in the door because they're going to lots of smaller money rodeos/shows....doesn't always come down to caliber of rider/horse.  I don't rodeo myself and could be misunderstanding what I've heard others say, though.

She's got the best horse in my opinion in the whole industry right now. She can pull that off with him because he's so solid and consistent. He goes out and makes the same fast run every time. Even on his off days he still puts down a solid pattern. A lot of the other horses in the top 15 don't have that going for them. In my opinion that's a better horse than one who can run hard, but knocks half the runs. One of those top 15 was at a local rodeo a couple weekends ago and didn't have any clean runs on any of the horses. I can see why it takes close to a hundred rodeos for some to qualify. At least some use several backups and don't use up their best ones.

TOTALLY AGREE!  The invitational rodeos should not count.  Someone didn't have their thinking cap on when that rule went down.  It's a very unfair advantage given to an elite few.  Really, really wrong.

Fallon taylor only ran Flo about 48 times before she sent her home and started seasoning colts. I'm sure she wasn't the only one that used her main horse in the beginning then let back ups or colts pick up the slack after that.

Looks like there are only two under 40 rodeos and they both got at least one big check. There is no doubt that winning one of the big invitational rodeos almost assures you of a ticket to the NFR. I just don't think it's fair to count any rodeos unless everyone has a chance to compete there. I wonder if this is the most ever qualified with over $100k in earnings? Can't wait to watch this year!

I am so excited for Vickie Carter. She has made it on one horse and that horse she is riding is Rachel Hendrixs horse that past away last year in a carbon monoxide accident. She has been and will continue to ride for Rachel through the NFR. Se excited to have 2 Utah girls there running...

I'm also excited for her. I had never heard of her until a week or so ago... but I hope she rocks the nfr. I always end up cheering for the ones that have a good story behind them. Wouldn't that be something if she went and did awesome. I would probably cry thinking about Rachels parents.

I think the best part of the story is that rachel trained blaze from the ground up. Most girls who do well in high school are riding horses they bought already winning.. That horse really is a part of Rachel and I can only imagine how proud her parents will be to see him run down the alley way at the T&M..

Still.. How many places can you run barrels with a chance at a $50k check? It only took $9k more than that to qualify this year. I think it's great that these ladies have a chance to win more money, but it should be a bonus, it shouldn't count towards the standing unless everyone running had a chance to win that as well.

Calgary is set so you can only count half of the $100,000 towards the standings. Is that what you are meaning?

Calgary has a very clear cut qualification process.  So - really anyone can get qualified to compete there.....makes sense to count part of it.  I don't know how Houston chooses who will compete.

Houston is invitation I believe. But yes, there is a qualification system to Calgary...it requires some extensive hauling over the country...but anyone going down the road has a shot at it...they just have to win at the right places.

If you are in the top 40 in the world from the previous year you can get in to Houston. So to get in, you have to do well the previous year, which is possible for anyone except someone with a rookie card.

Well, kind of--like there should be a limit at the high-dollar, invitational only rodeos. Say only $10K per big invitational rodeo can count towards your standing-you still get the whole check but it won't count on WPRA standings. Even like the Champions Challenge--you do good one year, then you're set up for the opportunity to "hold your place". Maybe it's fair, maybe not but it doesn't seem like it.
In big rodeos like Cheyenne, where anyone who wants to enter has a shot-the whole amount could count.
Maybe that makes sense?

I'm going to go ahead and guess that either Lisa Lockhart or Sarah McDonald will win the world!!! Going to be an exciting 10 days!!

I was a bit sad to see Jill Welsh at #16 and only $500 out of qualifying. After the stellar 4th of July she had and her dealing with health issues I really hoped to see her in Vegas!

If a person has worked hard enough, put in the time, drove the miles, paid their fees, and put themselves in a position to be able to compete and win at the high paying rodeos-then every dime should count. Plenty of girls make it to the NFR each year that weren't eligible to compete in the limited rodeos. Being a Professional Barrel Racer is a chosen lifestyle and a competition. It's not supposed to be fair. If a person wants to be invited to Calgary and be eligible for the limited entry rodeos-then go win. It's like the quote from Vince Lombardi-The person at the top of the mountain didn't fall there.

I sure hope Lisa and Louie win this year. I don't have anything against anyone else and would be happy for anyone to win, but this year Lisa and Louie were on fire. How cool would it be to say that they won the American, Calgary and the NFR

I am so excited for Vickie Carter. She has made it on one horse and that horse she is riding is Rachel Hendrixs horse that past away last year in a carbon monoxide accident. She has been and will continue to ride for Rachel through the NFR. Se excited to have 2 Utah girls there running...

I'm with you--what a beautiful story/background. I really hope she does well at the NFR! Go Blaze!

I'm with those who think the invitational rodeos $$ shouldn't count--or at least set a "ceiling" so the max you can win at an invitational is "X" $$

Calgary is set so you can only count half of the $100,000 towards the standings. Is that what you are meaning?

Well, kind of--like there should be a limit at the high-dollar, invitational only rodeos. Say only $10K per big invitational rodeo can count towards your standing-you still get the whole check but it won't count on WPRA standings. Even like the Champions Challenge--you do good one year, then you're set up for the opportunity to "hold your place". Maybe it's fair, maybe not but it doesn't seem like it.
In big rodeos like Cheyenne, where anyone who wants to enter has a shot-the whole amount could count.
Maybe that makes sense?

I believe these rodeos were voted to be included by the wpra membership. So if you want to make changes, you need to be wpra member and convince the majority your way of thinking is better then the current

I'm confused.  I didn't think the season was over until today.  The standings on the website are as of 9/28.  Are there no rodeos these last couple days that might count?

And as far as limited entry/invitaational rodeo, I think if you are that good and get yourself qualified, then yes the money should count.  It's part of being the elite of the sport. I remember when Calgary money didn't count, some girls would turn down the invite so they could go to rodeos that did count.  I don't have a dog in the fight as I don't rodeo and probably never will, but as a fan and spectator, when I see Lisa and Louie on fire at Houston and Calgary I want to see them jump up in the standings.  I also appreciate the fact that some girls put in the blood, sweat and tears and get themselves to these limited entry rodeos, then they win and that win sends them to their first NFR and that changes their life and allows them to quit their day job and make barrel racing their career.

Me too, she had such a great year so disappointing. I can't imagine that feeling of not going and only $500 keeping you from the NFR...

It's going to be a good race between the top 5 girls. Never count out Sheri and her average champion Stingray....she's a tough one to beat.
