Can someone tell me about walkers? Preferred sizes, speeds.. about what do they run? I don't know much about them, other than I'd love to have one and have come across a couple of used ones.

Thanks!

I have seen that you can tie a childs swing to it, and keep a child busy for hours as you have it set on the trotting speed.

I believe this would be a useful tool in my home.

I think it just depends on your needs.  I would buy a used one.  We have a training facility with 4 barns, each barn has 4 walkers. Make sure you keep them greased and the belts in good condition.  All ours are 4 horse walkers.  One speed, but they can get them rolling if they want to.  We have a filly that will on occasion run off with it.

Our walker is the biggest thing I miss about home...  Our is a 5 horse and pretty tall, I believe it has 3 gears.  I would try to find a taller one so if a horse gets to having to much fun or get stupid they can't hit their head on the arms.  Our chains are pretty long and we have covered them in plastic before.

This kind of gives you and idea of ours.  The one we had before this was very short like what you used to see on the tracks a lot.

Good God. In order of recognition to this thread and the word "Walker"
1. The Walking Dead.
2. Tennessee Walking Horses.
3. The exerciser - ONLY after reading the thread.

Some of the replies are a bit funny when put in the context of thinking it was about walking horses...

lol...I thought I was losing my mind too...my first thought was a human walker (like a cane) since I work in medical...then I thought Tennessee Walkers...
Ah, so hot walkers...got it now...

I don't have one but I've used them years ago...I really like the looks of those newer ones where the horse is basically sectioned off in panels so you don't have to tie them, I think Priefert makes those.  I guess it will depend on what walker you purchase but they all have variable speeds that I've seen.  I know the one farm I worked at had an older one that had issues with the motor, so I think like any other mechanical product if you are buying, I'd do some research on longvity of the actual motor and quality of the product.

Thank you all!  I had a lovely time with my google search when I didn't include "hot"! Lol

I would love, love, love to have one of the free flow walkers, but I really just want a 3-4 horse model that can go a couple of speeds to help me with warm up / cool down when I'm running short on time.

Any guesses on what a fair cost would be on a used one?

Good for about 10 minutes, maybe 15 unless you are ready to go home, then they will happily swing for at least an hour and then puke in the truck on the way home....

I bought a westwalk walker from the company. I paid $3000 for a used one/reconditioned, but I ended up with an almost new one. when the trucker was bringing mine from az back to the company when he stopped someone stole the motor and transmission. so when they reconditioned it the insurance company paid for new motor and tranny the company repainted it and it looks and works like brand new.  It has a variable speed in both directions. I would not use a one direction walker

Do you have to tie the horses differently when it starts going in the other direction, or do the catch on pretty fast?

They will just turn around with it.  They may try to back up with it the first couple of times but will get it pretty quick.  If you horse has never been on one I would suggest putting a horse in front that has and walking your horse with the chain in hand and not hooked for a lap or two.  If you walker is secured it won't be as bad but if it isn' they can pull it over and you will have a wreck.

I have seen used ones go for anywhere from $500-$2,000.  The cheaper ones probably need some work or a new motor.  I am always keeping a look out for one to see if I can get a good deal on it.  I just don't want to buy one until we get somewhere we are going to stay for awhile.
