Location: Mountains of VA | After reading another post concerning tetanus boosters for people, I decided that I should get one since it has been approx. 20 years since my last tetanus vacc. I am not insured, I stop at the Walmart Pharmacy today and ask if they do those and what was the cost. It is $60 WTH I think that is just crazy Considering how much it cost to vaccinate a horse, I'm thinking about using the same vacc. on myself.
Does anyone know the difference between the two vaccines??? |

| Your state should have some type of health clinic. Every state has some kind of free clinic so all the people who do not have ins. can get cheap care and kids can get the required vaccinations free. |

| No really in not sure, would a humans immune system be able to even process something designed for a horse?
I mean you can use penicillin on humans, cattle, horses, sheep ext. But each species has its own vaccinations and protocalls for vaccination.
Ive pricked my self with cattle tetanus and my whole hand swelled up and it was extremely painful. Would've want a whole dose!

Location: Texas | i never recommend using animal products on people, even though many times they are the same thing. the problem is- are the adjuvants the same thing? is the concentration in the vial the same?? A single horse dose may or may not be the same thing you would need, or it may have products in that vial in addition to the active ingredient that may cause a reaction in people. |

Location: Mountains of VA | Thanks for all the info. I will call around tomorrow. Our "free" clinic is a nightmare in paperwork and I do not qualify because I do farm full time. I'm caught in the hole.........Virginia did not expand Medicare, I make too much for the free clinic but not enough to be able to afford any of the Obamacare plans. I certainly do not mind paying for my vaccine but com'on, $60, thats crazy.
I get so frustrated with the high cost of medical care for humans. For example, ivomec treatment for humans is something like $1,000 or so!!! We can deworm 1200lb horses for approx. $3.00. Medical costs for humans is out of control. |

Location: Texas | Our little local pharmacy said it was $45 without insurance for the tetanus shot. I think I would call around. Or maybe call your county Health Services Department. |

Location: the other T-town, Oklahoma | Dont know about the pricing but I do know is the tetanus at your local clinics is more than likely not just a plain Tetanus or TD shot. They now are TDaP, which also have a booster for whooping cough, based on that alone it isn't going to be the same as what horses get. If you haven't had a tetanus shot of anykind in 20+ years then you will get the TDaP. |

| I turned down a tetanus booster at the hospital because they only had the DPT shot. I would only agree to a tetanus booster. Was told on the DL that I would probably be OK because there were very few cases of "wild tetanus'' (his term) and that was only in people with 3rd world connections.
While I think "some" vaccines may be a good idea, I think many over vaccinate. Good luck in finding a Tetanus only booster! |

My point is the HIGH cost of medical TX for humans vs. animals. Why does it cost SO MUCH to vaccinate humans vs. our horses/cattle etc.? |

Malpractice insurance is the main cause. |
