I live near Memphis. Its hot and humid like you wouldn't believe from April/May to October/November. Then, its just plain cold. Rarely ever snows over here.
Barrel racing is plentiful in this area! Never a shortage of places to go, be it Lucky Dog races, or little saddle club shows with $250 added.
As far as feed goes, I've never had a problem finding what I like. Hay is another story- while its affordable, we had a rough year and hay will be short this winter. |

Location: Tennessee | Like several others have said, the weather varies. It's a lot greener than CA, I can tell you that. My corporate office is in CA, and I always miss the green grass when I have to make a trip there. If you don't like the weather here, just wait a bit, it'll change. I'm near Nashville and you can generally have a choice of several shows every weekend. Several indoor series will run every winter. We don't have as many shows as TX does, but I imagine it's a bigger variety than CA. Here, you have NBHA, IBRA, and lots of series put on by individual producers, as well as all the jackpots that pop up. |

Location: Wherever the Army sends my husband | I'm in the Clarksville area and I'm not a huge fan of it. There are plenty of places to haul but it seems that its mostly local clubs that run for ribbons and are 1-2 hours away. It sucks to haul and then the ground is full of rocks( I swear rocks are a cash crop here!). It rains a lot! So if you don't have a covered arena its difficult to keep your horse legged up. Don't get me wrong its not all bad. I went to a show(that's what they call barrel races here) last weekend in Milan, TN and the ground was perfect. Saw a big name farm there and some really nice horses. But I'm from north Texas and if given the chance would go back in a heartbeat. Point is, it's not my first choice.

I've never seen them on horses before and I'll pull off 20+ a day if I don't drench them in flyspray daily. I hate ticks with a passion and couldn't walk from the drive to the pasture without finding one or more on me daily !!! |

I don't know where you are looking for shows but within 20 miles of you there are like 5 indoor arenas that have winter shows with awesome ground. Get out and look around. Go into Kentucky and down around Murfreesboro lots of places to ride and run. Muarry, Ky is only 1 hr and 40 mins from you if you go the long way. Short way is 1 hr. 20 mins. |

The ticks can be bad, but our vet recommended getting the frontline spray and spraying 3 sprays down their top line, on their butt, and on their chest every other week. A bottle lasted us almost all summer with 4 horses. Doesn't do much for the flies, but it worked wonders for the ticks. Only thing to keep the flies knocked down were the fly predators. We didn't think they worked, but we didn't use them this year and were overrun. |

| There are plenty of places in West TN, but there is also Middle and East TN and I think that they are all different, West TN crazy hot humidity, if it is going to snow it will be in March, and you never know if it is going to be in the 40's or 15 degrees in the winter. |

Location: Armuchee, GA, NW section of Ga | We live now in the NW section of GA but are looking at property up in TN, around the Chattanooga area. We love the area, the views, and the fact that Tennessee has no taxes which is a huge plus. We visit that area frequently. Temps are great too. We are looking for an area which will give us good river views, and a place for the barn for my horses. My husband knows I will not move unless I take them. If we cannot find a house, then we will build. As long as we are about 30 minute within Chattanooga I'll be happy. |

Location: East TN | I live in East TN...about 30 miles south of Knoxville.
The area is beautiful here at the foot of the Smokies...but everyone is right about the humidity ... it is sometimes plain awful in July, August and early September. Our Winters are hit or miss...sometimes you'd think you were in the Arctic circle while other times it's not too bad.
There are a lot of barrel races around.. I can usually find one somewhere every weekend that are no more than about 2 hours from home (of course you can find some farther/closer  )
If trail riding is your thing, there are some beautiful parks that offer overnight accommodations for the ponies as well as hook ups for the trailer OR small rental cabins.
As far as feed goes...we've got just as many Co-Ops and Tractor Supply stores as we do churches lol so you're good there. Sometimes hay is a little harder to find...or should i say REASONABLY priced hay is hard to find...it just depends on what kind of growing/cutting/baling season we experienced.
All in all, I would recommend living here to just about anyone  |

I think Southern Utah would be right up your alley. They can get snow but it is usually melted by that afternoon. No humidity, they have a lot of barrel races down there and you can also go into Nevada for them as it isn't a bad drive. In the warmer months you can head North and there are barrel races galore! |

I don't want to hijack the thread but could you please pm me? I know of McEwen, Nolensville, and Freedom Farms but they are all at least 1.5 hours away. I also know of Bearwallow and Clarksville 79 (both are under and hour and pretty darn close) And to the person that mentioned Frontline, I'll try that next year! |

Location: Home....Smiling M Farms | I live in middle TN, just north of Nashville, have lived here my whole life.
There are lots of barrel races, from IBRA, NBHA, jackpots, winter series, and all that. We don't have them during the week, but there are usually several to pick and choose over the weekends. Good grain is relatively easy to find and so is hay, this year was really wet and a lot of it went bad before it ever got cut, so it'll be rougher this winter to find any. Bugs are a pest, but they aren't like south texas bugs. lol The weather is a PAIN and frankly, if the opportunity ever comes for me to move, I will just because of the weather. I'm tired of it pouring rain for months on end and everything being literally above ankle deep in mud. Then 100% humidity on a 105 degree day in August, then -9 in January. If you don't have an indoor arena, it's really hard to condition one.
Having shows every weekend is nice but I am OVER the weather here. |

Good luck in your search.
While I love TN, we do have unpredictable weather & when the humidity is bad, it's BAD! Bugs are an ever present (even in winter) issue, especially fleas, ticks, & mosquitos.
West, Middle, & East are about as different from each other as possible, both physically and culturally -- It can seem like 3 different states at times. I'm on the west side of the state, but my mother grew up in East Tn.
Regardless though, you truly can't beat the people!

Sep-Nove are great Dec-Feb is cold and wet but seldom see a day below 20 degrees. sun make the "cold" days great. March -june great again. Mid July-aug SUCK hot humid.
This is a good saying to sum it up" if you don't like todays weather just wait a day or 2"
we get every weather combo God made.
I show year round every weekend I am alive and breathing, except for end of July and all of August every one gets off.

Location: Foot of the Smoky Mtns, East Tennessee | We live in East Tennessee about 20 miles south of Knoxville. There is somewhere to race every weekend. We are even close enough to be able to be in North Carolina or Georgia within two hours if we had to. We live at the foot if the Smokey Mountains so the seasons are beautiful. Yes...it gets hot in July and August but not hot enough to keep us from riding. We just don't ride in the heat of the day. We have eight horses and I've only had one tick this year. We have 3 medium size dogs in the house (one is out half of the time) and we feed the flea pills and don't have a flea issue. We have Tractor Supply and Co-Ops so finding quality feed has never been an issue either. I've lived here my whole life and love this area. |
