Just weaned my last foal for the year today. I usually put my foals next to their dams and let them wean across the rails and then a few days later turn the babies out in the big turn out. Today I took the filly out of the stall gave her a bath and then tied her up to dry. 30 mins later I put her in the stall next to her dam to eat lunch. The baby nickered to her momma and walked up to the fence and her dam pinned her ears and lunged at her with mouth wide open ready to do some damage. She proceeded to turn around and try to beat the heck out of my stall rails. Feet flying and ears pinned.
This mare does not normally play well with others (Horses that is, total sweet heart to people). I have to be mindful of this when I turn her out with others.
This is the mares first foal and she is back in foal for 2016. This is the first time I've ever even heard of something like this. Prior to today she was a great momma and never had any problems with her being aggressive towards her foal.
Mostly just curious if anyone else has a mare that has done this. It strikes me as very odd that she would be so aggressive towards her own foal.

My guess would be after just having a bath and then being on other side of fence she didn't smell like her baby and didn't realize she was...i wouldn't worry too much ..of course I'd watch her with her new baby next year those first few hours just to be sure but sounds like she's ready for some freedom lol
