| Tell me about New Mexico.. my family purchased a ranch in Cibola County near Ramah and Grants.
My husband had some unexpected job changes and we are "slightly" considering moving from NC ..
Does anyone know this area? Weather? Barrel races? From what I know it is out in the Boonies

Thank you!
Currently we are in North Carolina, but the ranch is in Ramah, New Mexico.
My family has all visited but my husband and I have not.. they say it is gorgeous! But it seems pretty far out from town-I think Grants is around 45 mins away. It is 45 mins south of Gallup

Location: SW New Mexico | I'm a native New Mexican.. and Ramah is located south of Gallup. and near Zuni.. it is in the mountains..
My brother leased a ranch near Fence Lake.. colder in winter than I'm used to. He is now manager for Floyd Lee Ranch at San Mateo.
I've lived in Silver City, south of there for 34 years..lol..
Ramah is beautiful, tall pines, some flats.
As far as barrel racing you'll either have to haul to Grants, Belen, Las Lunas, or Farmington, all a ways for you from the Ramah area....

I grew up near Hobbs, and am intimately familiar with it. You must be a pretty glass is half full kind of personality to describe it as a pretty neat place. I think a person from North Carolina would be in a bit of a shock to move down there sight unseen, lol!
Great people and horsemen in our area though, you are right.

LOL! I did get to rodeo a little bit to Santa Fe and Raton PRCA rodeos and see the country a little bit at some jackpots too...But I rented Cindy and Tommy Smiths big house and split a barn with them for four years and met some great friends in the area like Rebecca Hughes and my best friend Megan so you could say that I was just around some really great rodeo athletes and horseman and women. But the country side and people are sweet when you get up in the mountains Mescalero and Capitan rodeoing over the 4th. Or like I said the pro rodeos like Santa Fe and Raton....pretty cool rodeo in Ft.Sumner every year too and those girls were really nice. My dad has a place in Queen. I just like the state I think haha |

I am your favorite rash and you know it
Location: Being pushed over the edge, NM | Depending on how far into the mountains the ranch is, it's not that bad actually. You'll get snow, but our winters are nothing like the far north east. Summers will be very pleasant in the mountains, the only major calamities would be fire and flooding. Hopefully the feds are learning to let fires burn instead of putting them out. The fires we've had in the last ten years have devastated the land, so much fuel was allowed to collect that when it caught fire, nothing short of God himself could put it out. Then the rains came and the epic flooding. Barrel races, we've got good enough weather for nearly year round rodeos and jackpots, but you *will* need a horse that can handle bad ground. The rodeo association has been trying to clean its act up, they seem to have gotten some things under control finally, so they are working on building their membership back up. NBHA is pretty much dead, they started their own statewide association (Southwest Barrel Racing Association/SWBRA) to have better races and prizes with more participation. In Moriarty the Wright family has a fantastic indoor pen and puts on events year round. There are jackpots and rodeos statewide, you'll definitely have to drive though. You'll also be close enough to Arizona to take advantage of their events. |

Location: Heart of Texas | If you're used to crap weather, you'll enjoy it. The people are really nice and the state is small enough you can get around in a weekend, but the wind blows 99% of the time. And i'm not talking about breezy. I'm talking your horse can't walk straight it's so bad. I lived there for 18 years too long. And I wouldn't consider moving back without an indoor arena. The economy isn't that great. Albuquerque is finally growing a little but the crime is horrendous. It's great for people who HATE heat and have allergies. Best of luck if you do move there. |

Location: Texas | Sorry to hijack but ... I'm thinking of moving from Texas to NM. I'm in the middle of barrel racing heaven but I just want to trail ride now that I'm older and I'm tired of our hot hot summers.
Where would be a good place to land - with plenty of trail riding, and not too terribly far from civilization? |

Location: Gainesville, TX | My family owns a decent sized ranch just east of Tucumcari and I have a ton of family around Belen and Albuquerque. New Mexico, as much as it can be quite beautiful, is not for the faint of heart. It's quite rugged and pretty dry, night and day from NC. You are going to have pretty extreme weather, lots of lightning in the mountains and cold/blazing hot on the flats. Things are much more spread out than in NC and HUGE well established native cultures (I personally love this but you can get some weirdos especially in Taos). If you like rain and trees and green stuff and short drives this is not the state for you. If you like rugged landscapes, interesting people, history and difficult weather, you will love it. They do have some great places to ski as well. |

| Thank you all for the great replies!
I am originally from Minnesota so I am quite use to the cold weather and wind! My husband and I met while working in Wyoming so we are also familiar with the climate there.
I think that the hardest part would be leaving our community here in NC, but also the fact the ranch in NM is 45 mins from town!
We would for sure go visit before deciding. But I think you all have me talked out of it

No Kidding? Silver City? Back in the 90's one of my friend's family bought a ranch (or went there to run it) in Silver City. I think North of Silver though? They were from Nebraska and I don't think they lasted long there. Big difference... We went there several times over the years. Then my ex's parents had a house in Angel Fire so we went all over up there skiing a bunch...Red River, Santa Fe, Taos, Eagle Nest. Love the shopping in Red River! lol
But anything South of Gallup is a haul to anywhere. And lots of ethnicity in the area. |
