Guess I should have made myself clearer. As I have 2 horses that do not need it for weight gain and one horse who does. Thanks for the article as it did make it clearer. Just trying not to feed what I really do not need to feed. I am trying to put weight on one and take weight off the other two. The other two need exercise I know as do I.

They're both good for different things. Flax is high in omega 3's unlike every other grain horses eat, so it's fabulous for balancing out omega 3/6 ratios. It's also great for adding shine. You can't feed that much of it though, usually only 1/2-1 cup a day so if you're trying to put weight on one, rice bran is better for that. Personally I like Renew Gold because it's the same price as a bag of rice bran at my local TSC but in addition to the rice bran also has flax and coconut. I still add another flax supplement though because my horse gets hay only, no fresh pasture, and needs the extra omega 3's to help balance him out.
