I had thought that ASOF was a blue roan, but on the Fulton site it has him as a red roan. Is he in fact a red roan?

Thanks

AQHA has him registered as a red roan.
He is in fact a BAY ROAN
meaning his genetic Code is AT LEAST Ee/Aa/Rr

A blue roan has a genetic code of AT LEAST Ee/Rr Meaning only a black gene carrier.

Since ASOF carries and " A " or agouti gene that limits his black points to his legs mane and tail he is in fact a Bay

I have a 2001 mare that is a bay roan but whenever I registered her with AQHA her weanling year they did not have bay roan as a color choice so I picked the closest color which was red roan.  I see where A Streak of Fling is a 1999 foal so that may be why he is also registered as a red roan with AQHA.

Bay roan was not a color option. He is in fact a bay roan though.

Thank u all for your help. My mare is due in 2016 by him. I was playing around with the color calculator, wondering what colors I could get with the foal.

Again, thank you all

I've watched it twice. I thought ASOF was maybe 15 hands?? He looks huge next to the guy holding him.

I'm pretty excited about this baby, my mare is a FWF x Sun Frost bred.

His color is gorgeous! I have a yearling by him. I sure was hoping she would roan out but so far has not! Her coloring is very unique though. She's a chestnut and her mane has dark points a the root but looks flaxen.

My SOF filly's mother was a very light buckskin.  When the filly was born she was a solid brown. I was so hoping for a roan. Well 1 year later she turned into a gorgeous very dark bay roan, almost a blue.

Base color doesn't matter. If you want to increase your chances of a roan baby, breed a roan mare to a roan stud...but it still is only a 75 % chance.

It's almost important to consider if the horse that carries the roan gene is homozygous or heterozygous. A Streak of Fling is heterzygous. Meaning one dominant and one recessive copy of the roan gene.

Right...If either is homozygous then you will get a roan 100% of the time, however it may be expressed to different degrees.

There is no such thing as a recessive roan gene. They may have one copy of roan with a non-roan gene R/r (heterozygous). Or they may have two copies (homozygous) R/R or none r/r. Roan is dominant as are most color genes, so one copy will express the color of roan applied to the base color of the horse. Two copies also express the roan gene. When they are homozygous for a color that's all they can offer to their offspring. So when bred to a non-roan, they will always have a roan foal.

What kind of mare is good to breed to him? Confirmation wise? I have a daughter of FG that is race bred on the bottom (Dr Kirk) that I want to breed to him. She is a tad long in the back. I had that was not a good combination? I have another FG daughter but she is just a yearling. I could wait for her though

I can't remember exactly how it works, but I thought if you bred a red roan to a red roan the embryo would die in utero.

Thank you for phrasing it better that is what I meant, on the darn phone and harder to type these things out. And sometimes the base color will show not the roan applied to it. I know of a palomino that carries a copy of the roan but you can't see it by looking at her.

That's a frame overo gene that you're thinking of. It is lethal when homozygous. Roan doesn't have anything to do with the frame overo pattern. It's call OLWS.

Right.  I know/agree with you that it has nothing to do with Roans. I was trying to put a name to the genetic issue BMW was bringing up.  And yes, the doctrine/old belief used to be out there about breeding roan to roan and embyro's dieing etc.  but thankfully with more education and understanding of genetics and hereditary inheritance, many of these beliefs are proven incorrect.

My daughter has her retired college rodeo mare in foal to him.  She is a true black so we are excited to see what color she will throw. Awesome video of ASOF. Great to see him turned loose to get an idea of how he moves.
