I bought a little gelding they had had an old injury on his pastern and cannon bone that wasn't treated well. It doesn't seem to cause any soundness issues but it is ugly and I think it will interfere with the use of any sport boots in the hind. Anyone have any old remedies for decreasing that big scaly scabby knot on the front of his pastern?

I have heard of using castor oil from the health food store. It's a thick oil and heat it up rub on the area and wrap with flanel and leave it over night. But I don't know if it works on old scars. I would think it would soften up an old scar.

Without a picture it sounds like you are describing an old bad cut with a case of runaway granulated flesh // proud flesh that has turned into a gristle. The scaly scar and knot may indicate heat from a pocket of infection still remaining hidden in the knot.
If it is on the pastern there is more flesh to help fill in the scar ... if located on the cannon bone it can be tuff to get a scar to recede .... all you have there is skin covering bone and tendons ...
Keep in mind to get injuries to heal or scars to become smaller your medication is usually some type of skin/flesh irritant ... which signals the body to concentrate on healing this specific spot and exciting new skin and hair growth.
So .. let us irritate it a little bit and activate healing at the same time ..
ichthammol is going to be the irritant ..
one ounce of strong iodine mixed with one qt of corn oil in a spray bottle as the healer
4 day treatment for a month or more ...after 2-3 weeks shine a flashlight at an angle at the edges of the skin and see if new hair shows up as you doctor over time ...
Repeat the 4 day treatment with hydro water pressure on the scar each day and air dry or towel dry ..
1.) apply a thin coat of ichthammol ... use throw away gloves .. it is nasty and stinks
next 3 DAYS .. SQUIRT A coat of the iodine mix
CONTINUE TO REPEAT FOR A MONTH OR MORE ...
DO NOT WRAP!!!
Good Luck ... this has worked for me many times ...

I tried to attach a pic originally and I was unable but you are precisely right in how you have described it. It looks like an old rope or wire cut. It doesn't seem to hold heat.

I have wonderful results using EQyss Mega-Tek. Used on a mare that had white hair spots on her nose and withers and it completely changed her hair color back to her normal coat color. Just rubbed a little on everyday until completely gone.
