| Have a 3 1/2 year old mare that is almost 6 months (will be 6 months on the 7th) pregnant for the first time (her and mine's first foal) and she is usually the first one in the barn and first one out to go get hay. She was last in tonight, ate her food at about the same pace but was making weird choking noises, nothing stuck though and then she was fine. Came out of her stall, drank about a bucket of water (normal after she eats) and then just stood there while the others left her. Took her temp and it was 102.7 and she wasn't acting like her normal self, lethargic but gut sounds and ate hay out of my hand. She's had all her vaccines including Pneumabort-K and no other horses are sick. No horses have left the property since 2 weeks ago. Should I be worried? I know fever can cause abortions so just want to prevent that but not just throw drugs at her! Had 2 teeth pulled about a month and a half ago and the reason she is s broodmare is because she has a leg injury. Also been very rainy and cold here so possibly thinking pneumonia or infection??? |

Also there are many different strains of rhino, not all are protected by the vaccine |

| Temp was 102.7 and she seemed to be breathing fine, how do I check respiration, haven't done that in a long time. I'll go check on her in a few minutes and update temp. At 10 pm I checked her and it will be 12 in about 10 minutes

Location: Florida.. | I would just call Vet.. they are the most experienced and can see the horse in person as a preventative.. |

Location: CTX | Not sure, but I would have a vet look at her. We got our first colt this year, and I was worried about everything that was a bit off... yes I am overprotective, but with her being bred I would take no chances.

| Update: currently 41• outside and her temp is down to 102.0...she's still eating and I will take it in a little bit too. Didn't want to call the vet last night at midnight but do you guys think he should still be called today? She seems more normal. I'm a big worry wart, especially about her but then i don't want to seem too overprotective! |

Thankyou. It's been really really tuff. All because she ate a bug. She got potomac horse fever, even though she had all her shots and had gotten another potomac horse fever booster in july. |

| Vet should be calling me back in about 15 min...back up to 103 and 44 degrees outside. Definitely not something to take lightly just wanted to hear thoughts! She's not my mare so she's definintely been babied! In a stall right now eating hay, drank water and peed but just acting a little tired still. Praying it's nothing serious and maybe just a pregnancy thing!  Sorry for your loss, I can't imagine! |

| I have also pulled a few ticks off of her the last few days (finally dying off here in MN) and some of them were pretty white if that helps at all |

| She's up to 104.9 but vet pulled blood and is almost positive its a tick thing so gave a shot of tetricycline and also gave banamine. Still alert and eating and already much happier! Thanks everyone! |

| Latest update :) Still acting normal and vet said her temp wouldn't go down till morning (from 104.9) but it's down to 95.8??? Tried it with two thermometers (one is brand new) and I got 97 the one time but then the other said 95 as well? I'll go check her in a little bit with yet another one but doesn't that seem low?! |

I agree. Horses are very fragile. They can be fine one minute and deathly ill in an hour. My broodmare wasn't feeling well, took her temp. It was 104. Rushed her to the vet. She had pneumonia. Vet said any longer and it would have been critical because she was bred. |

| Sorry guys just saw this again! She is great and was fine actually that night! Vet came out one more time and gave her one more shot but is confident it was from those darn deer ticks! It's been raining here so everyone's temps been a little low and she probably already has a low temp :) Blood work was also normal, red blood cells were a little high but thats from whatver she has, caught it in time though! |
