okay so I have 4 indoor stalls with dirt floors for the time being. I have boarding horses, what is the best way to fix, cheapest bedding or anything that will help the stalls not be so sloppy so fast! It's a pain and getting expensive putting $4 bag of bedding every other day in each pen
When I kept my horses in stalls during college I found good luck with a stall mat for my gelding and putting lime down first and then I used those bedding pellets, the kind that you have to put water in to fluff up. I just wouldnt put as much water in and they the would soak up more in the stall.
Bite the bullet and buy stall mats, in the coming years you will love yourself for it. Level the stalls out and use barn lime and then your shavings will last a lot longer. Or if you do have the money, stall savers.
Try more shavings. I put at LEAST 3 bags of shavings over a period of two days when my horses are in stalls. If you don't keep their feet dry you are going to have thrush issues. It is just expensive to board a horse.
2 to 3 bags of pellet shavings lightly spray with water not to get them all to expand but about half....and give it 5 mins to expand...rake them out evenly...then 2 or 3 bags of shavings the regular kind on top...the unexpanded pellets underneath will absorb urine as well as the expanded ones will provide some cushion ..watering will also cut the dust...and then the loose shavings on top make a nice cushiony bed :) I have dirt floor stalls and this works amazing...on my real messy horses I might use more pellet style and less flaky style ...
