| So my dad has this mare. She has had several foals but the last one she had was 7 years ago. She is now 25 but looks like a 10 year old. She is an own dtr. of Doc Quixote, and has King Fritz and Mr. Gunsmoke on her papers. We are getting her ovaries checked and asking a vet to make sure, but would you breed her or would you sell her and take that money to buy a younger one?? If sell, about what price?? Thank you!! (Sorry if I am confusing!) |

Location: LaBelle, Florida | If she were mine, I would make the attempt to breed her and keep a replacement foal out of her.
Once you get her bred, keep her bred and either sell the foal or sell her in foal.
At that age, even if she is breeding soud, you won't get much for her is she is open.
Also another factor in her price will be if she is broke to ride. If she is sound enough to trail ride, she might be just what someone is looking for.
There are a lot of factors that will affect her price if you choose to sell.

| IF she is still fertile, I would breed her and take the chance. She isn't worth it to try to sell because you won't get more than $500-800 for a 25 year old open broodmare. |

I was once offered a low price on a 29 year old daughter of Sugar Bars.... Vet checked, breeding sound.... gorgeous mare.... Nope ... she paid her dues. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I think I would just not breed her at this age, shes 25 I think she would be just a happy mare hanging out and eating and enjoying life. If she was going to be bred I would worry about her health, its been 7 years since her last foal thats a pretty long time to be open and then bred at her age. |

Location: Where I am happiest | The chances of you selling her to a home are slim to none. By that age they are a huge risk of going to slaughter. We had a mare foal at 25 and she did alright but by that age the risk factor is alot higher. You can also check into flushing embryo's. It's alot cheaper these days then it used to be. Please dont sell that mare though. You put her at great risk. I get the kill pen listing everyday through FB and it is heartbreaking. |

Location: Florida.. | This is the time your heart has to override the wanting money or a foal..let her retire.. .. if you sell she will probrably go to slaughter..breeding her at that age after being open for years can be dangerous Imho.. |

| That's what I thought (little to old to have a foal), and I didnt want to sell here either. Think I will look into doing embryos (maybe), and she is broke to ride- she's really well broke. Thank you for your replies. |

| I bred my mare at 24 years old, had been running barrels and hadn't had a baby in 11 years. She took the first time and had a happy healthy colt. Even now at 28 she still doesn't look a day over 10 and is doing great. I'm very glad I took the chance when I had the opportunity. I did do an ultrasound first, she had a few small cysts but nothing major. I didn't do a culture or biopsy either. |

I agree with the ET option, but otherwise I'd let her retire or lightly ride her on trails is she's able. |
