Location: Woodstown, NJ | I switched my guys from Purina Omolene, a sweet feed, which I've been feeding for 25 years with no problems, to Blue Seal Carb Guard, a pellet, because my new mare is really hot and we were trying to calm her down by getting her off the sugar. I took the opportunity to get everyone else off the sugar as well. I picked Carb Guard because it has good protein and high fat. I also need a lot of fat for this mare as she is a hard keeper. It's been about a month and the horses are turning their noses up at the new grain. They don't come running at feeding time and sometimes leave some scraps in their buckets. My horse, not the mare, seems sluggish. I can't really tell with the other horses because they're all pasture pets. He is also farting up a storm. He is also licking his lips like he has cotton mouth. Tonight when I rode him, just walking, all of a sudden he fell down! I jumped off, he scrambled up. He looked okay. The ground was fine. Flat, dry, soft. There was nothing he could have tripped on. He was a bit concerned about where the mare was but he wasn't acting up or resisting anything; didn't seem distracted. Just walking along. I put him in the round pen and made him walk so I could get a good look. Everything looked normal but he wanted to come into the middle by me and stop. He's not a peppy horse but not generally lazy. I took his temperature. 99.7. Gums looked normal. No dehydration per the skin test. Feet felt cool. WTH?! I don't think it is something he's eating in the pasture because he's been in that pasture for years and this has never happened, plus he's in there with other horses and they are not licking their lips or farting. Could it be the grain? Could it be something else?

| I would stop feeding it, and send a sample of the feed to be tested for chemicals.
I don't know anything about blue seal, are you sure they are a medication free facility? |

Location: Florida.. | you should stick to Purina.. maybe Equine sr would work.
its low starch and sugar.its great tasting and textured..
you went from a high sugar load to none.. which can affect how they feel.. but the other issues Id be concerned about toxic feed.. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I sure as heck would stop feeding it to my horses, you need to check out Bluebonnet feeds, I feed a pellet feed that Bluebonnet makes and sure do like how my horses feel and look. 
That would scare the heck out of me if my horses were feeling sluggish after changing feeds. And then to stumble that bad...They are trying to tell you that they dont like it....You had better listen to what they are trying to say..  |

Purina Healthy Edge is beet pulp based low starch and sugar. You can get Amplify by the bucket also and add that to the HE. That's what I feed mine and add the amplify to those that need more fat. I tried Omolene once. They were crazy! Went back to the HE and they were fine |

| You need to find out where this feed was manufactured. Blue Seal manufactures cattle feeds. I made a quick phone call and some of their manufacuting facilities also process cattle feeds though I was assured the Florida plant has separate processing lines. I like Purina Equine Senior for both my 22-year old retired mare and my 7 year old gelding. Good luck and I hope your horses are okay. Glad to hear you pulled the feed from them. |

I have never been impressed with Blue Seal feeds and this gives me another reason to NOT like them... |

Location: texas | ok, I am the outcast here BUT...... I feed SAFE CHOICE SPECIAL CARE
my 9yo flaming jet mare was little hot, not bad by no means, so I switched from the ORIGINAL to the SPECIAL CARE, saw a huge difference..
my 4yo filly is also on the SPECIAL CARE, and she looks great... (bay)
my 9yo is currently prego 7 months along, and she looks great as well.... (sorrel)

Yes I am aware of that. I did switch to one of their feeds for a few weeks but switched back. I boarded with someone that all they fed was Blue Seal and their horses just didn't thrive on it. Blue Seal always seemed more expensive then other feeds also (at least in my area). |

| The rep I spoke with told me that the Florida plant runs equine and bovine feed processing on separate lines but NOT ALL OF THE MANUFACTURING plants do. Food for thought. |

Location: Woodstown, NJ | Just wanted to update everybody. I took them right off the Carb Guard and put them back on the Omolene and everybody is fine. The horse who was so sluggish that he fell down, continued to fart more than usual for a couple of weeks but then it went away and he seems back to normal. Thanks for all your help! |
