So I just bought horse from a guy and he never switched his papers for ownership from the last owner. Is there a way I can track down the person before him that owned the horse who is on his papers? It's not the end of the world if I can't but I'd really like this horse in my name.

jUST CHEAT A LITTLE BIT ...
Call AQHA and verify papered owner and address that papers show are on record .... no discussion on anything else ..
Fill out transfer per your papers into your name and sign sellers name and info with your left hand and different ink pen ... mail it off and wait on papers to arrive ...

I had the same problem... called AQHA and they told me to just get a bill of sale from person I bought the horse from and where they purchased it and AQHA would attempt to make contact with the last recorded owner. Of course there is no guarantee that person is going to respond or is even alive but the AQHA will work with you to get it changed.

If the person that you bought the horse from knows the person that is on the papers, I would see if they can get the old owners to sign the transfer for you.

This is something I would not do, I know that people do this but my luck I would get caught I just rather be honest and track the owner down and get them to sign.

I called AQHA and I just have to send them a bill of sale and a transfer report from the person I bought the horse from and they said they'll get it to work. There's no mention of who I have to make a check out to so I'm assuming AQHA, I can't find anything about it online.
