| Some one please talk me out of this!
I went to one of our local ranches and did a drive by looksie of their colt pen. I knew it was time for them to bring them in and I just wanted to see what they had. I wasn't even going to slow down if nothing caught my eye.
Well, guess what? Standing there, right by the fence was one of the prettiest colts I have seen in a LONG time. He made my heart stop and I just can't stop thinking about him. Definitely love at first sight! Sorrel with long flaxen mane, white hind socks and a butt to die for! I might drive back to town tonight just to oogle him again.
I need another colt like I need a hole in my head butt this the first horse I have fallen in love with since I saw my buckskin mare at the same ranch.

| After looking at the colts I am not 100% in love with the sorrel colt that caught my eye.
He was pretty broncy and snorty and I just don't want those kinds of horses anymore, BUT we are coming HOME with one of two (or maybe both) of these! But now I just need help deciding which one! (I have permission from the ranch to post).
They are out of old ranch stock so pedigree wouldn't mean much to anyone but us.
The dun is a yearling. He was so gentle and sweet. He followed us all over the corral, buried his head in my chest and soaked up all the attention we would give.
The chestnut is a 4 year old, was started as a 2 year old and then turned out. He is also gentle, although maybe not as gentle as the colt.
ETA - The pictures of the 4 year old aren't as good but there were 7 other attention hungry colts in the pasture who were making it almost impossible!

Common Sense and then some
Location: So. California | Those are some well fed colts! I'm partial to the sorrel, he is older, short back, but would muscle up nicely and you can start training him sooner.
However, go with YOUR gut and pick the one the best suits you. Both look like very nice using horses. It's going to be a tough decision! |

| I like the Dun yearling for sure! From the sounds of your post, you like him too. haha
The sorrel really reminds me a lot of the mare in my profile picture when we first saw her. She was a 4 year old who had been cowboy broke as a 2yo and then turned out to pasture and she was HUGE (Tall and WIDE). So huge she barely fit in the trailer (we had to haul her in the back slot because we couldn't get the divider shut!). He has the same kind eye that I fell in love with on the mare. She's been with us for a bit over 6 years now, and she is a keeper. Longest time her owner has ever owned a horse (she is a trainer, so she just buys, trains, sells). A few horses have came and went since her, and yet she's still here. It's definately the personality, and he looks like he has a similar one (smart, mostly sweet, orney at times, with some quirks). I see it in his eyes and his face. haha |

Location: Gainesville, TX | They both look made to last. If you get the yearling you'll be riding it this next year. The four year old will be ready to go immediately. Go with your personal preference. I don't think you'll go wrong either way. A vet check (xrays of hocks & stifles) might also help, just to make sure both are developing normally. |

| Of course you need both! One to ride now, and one to watch grow up! |

| .I vote Chestnut 4 year old. I love red heads and he looks like my gelding. But I also like that he's started and at a good age to go on with. I like his conformation and he's a stunner. BUT that's my personal feeling and how I'd choose. You met them so you know tons more than we do about them and I agree with others go with your gut. Or go with both! The dun is very very nice as well! |
