Location: KS | I am stuck in the mud. I work a $7.75 an hour part time job. I have missed College (which is not cheap!) to cover for this lady multiple times. I have missed a week to go on a trip with my grandpa that we have planned since last year. The lady did not have to work any extra hours, but hours did change. Since then, I have not missed a day. I am ALWAYS on time. I've only worked here for 6 months. Barrel Bash is coming up soon and I have been wanting to go for some time now. I have missed more barrel races I could count on my hand because I always have to come in and cover for this woman. Well, I asked for ONE day off to go to Barrel Bash and her EXACT words were " I have something going on that day. I don't know what, but I do.." Should I just put my two weeks in, enjoy the rodeo, and look for a better job or just forget about barrel racing for now??
Note: This will be my last barrel race for a well... |

Will you be able to take care of your horse without an income? If you are being treated wrong at work that is one thing but missing a barrel race or two vs quitting the only means you have to support yourself, if that is the case, is not smart unless you have another job lined up. You mentioned missing school, now that is something that is very important. There is plenty of employers out there that will work with your school schedule and if this lady is not willing, I would say at least put in your two weeks and look for another job with a little more flexibility for you.

Location: KS | I live with my grandparents who help out a lot since of course $7.75 is not enough to put diesel in my truck and food in my stomach. I use my whole paycheck on my horses and the rest goes in my truck. She isn't even my boss, but my boss says I have to ask her since she will cover my shift. When they hired me they said they were flexible, but I see not flexibility. My boss is a huge sweetheart, but isn't any help. |

Sweetheart or not....I would have a sit down with the BOSS and I would tell him exactly what she said....Then, I would be looking for another job! |

That's what I'm more than likely going to do. I've been wanting to quit for a while because of the pay, but I kept chickening out.. I can always work at McDonalds.. They pay $8.50 an hour and they're flexible..

My grandpa has been telling me to quit for the past 4-5 months. I miss out on a lot. I just planned on getting another job before I quit this one.

Location: Phoenix | I agree, I think you should quit. If you were to work at someplace like McDonald's they have the staff to support someone being gone every now and again. I would absolutely despise the work environment that you're in. I would absolutely not miss another college class to cover for this lady if that means you lose your job then so be it. |

If your grandparents support you in the quiting of this dead end job then quit and enjoy your horses and go to college, you will always find another job, theres plenty out there. |

Location: Southeast Louisiana | Be sure you give two weeks notice and leave on good terms. It will mean a lot when you go to look for another job and use this one as a reference. This is obviously not going to be your career, so I wouldn't sweat leaving. But, you want to at least have an ex-boss who will say good things about you such as "Yes, I'd hire her again. She was a great employee." And that can mean more for future jobs than you might understand right now. |

Location: Florida.. | IIts easy for everyone to say QUIT your job GO to barrel race..
let me ask this..... if barrel races are more important then work how wiill she pay for this event and pay to feed her horses and care for them? I know grandpa is supportive but she pays for her horses herself.. Please line up other work to keep the burden OFF them unless they have sat down and clarified what they re willing and ABLE to do for you as far as supporting the horses and your hobbies.. I realize your missing out.. and that job isnt fair.. talk to the boss to.. but dont Burden the grandparents unless they can .its interesting when someone says they want to miss work to go to bahamas or something people say work is more important but a barrel race .. lord behold.. |

Location: KS | My boss and I talked about it AGAIN today. She finally called the lady up and got her to cover for me. So, I still have my job and can enjoy a nice barrel race. I am still looking around for a better paying job, but until then, I'm still working. Thank you guys for all the advice. |
