Bump for you. I'm currently not sleeping like I should because I ride with trula Churchill in a couple hours and I think this is only the second time she has put on a clinic for adults so there was no information.... pretty sure I fan girled a little on the inside last night when it was worm, trula, and I in the arena getting a ride in before today.

Nikki Steffes does....and I do not want this thread turned into a "Bubba" and Mary bashing deal...I am simply interested in her clinic, and hope to learn something....

Before you attend any clinic, ask yourself how many high quality , top performing barrel horses has the clinician trained???? How many has Mary trained? Did she train Latte? There are a lot of commercialized clinicians out there. Sharon Camarillo went to the NFR on ONE horse but has made millions on clinics. How many Sharon Camarillo horses do see going down the road or have ever gone down the road? Compare that to say Sheri Cervi or Danyelle Campbell etc. How many has Lynn McKenzie trained? Lol just ask yourself those questions before you sign up.

EXACTLY!!!  I would go to a top futurity trainers clinic and be money WAY better spent then many of the NFR who most have bought the already made horse. Go to someone who actually trains horses for a living and has trained multiple top tier horses. Thats where many of the NFR horses come from!

I know people that don't train and haven't had a lot of great horses but they can teach. They have the knowledge and can pick things up but not necessarily have the talent to get it done themselves. I keep a very open mind when it comes to someone that can help another when it comes to barrel racing..JMO

Jackie I'm not really a fan of the Walkers, as you know but putting that aside I can think of other clinicians that have done more in the barrel racing "training" world than Mary.

How many horses did Charmayne James train before she started doing her clinics many years ago?  I haven't heard of any other than Scamper.  I can't remember if she trained Cruiser or not.  I don't hear a lot about the ones she has trained since she quit rodeoing.  She has quite a following in her clinics.  She probably has trained a lot of horses and I just haven't heard or read anything about them. I think her clinics are much improved from when she started and people get a lot from her training and teaching style.

I agree! Heck, I'd go just so that I could work with Nikki Steffes! A talented hand with a degree in Molecular Biology? I bet she has a very analytical approach, but can put it across in a common sense sort of way. I'd have a ton of fun with that!

I put on a Mary Walker clinic in my hometown this summer. What I can tell you is that yes it was Great. The clinic has an overall approach of working on horsemanship with every student with the individual level that both them and their horses are at. I learned a few new drills that I had never learned at previous clinics and now use them regularly. Mary uses a keep it simple approach and helped everyone on an individual basis....some horses needed different areas of help than others the one thing in common was an overall general focus on striving for better horsemanship and quality movement. Nikki is also on hell of a hand that is for sure, I gained a lot of valuable knowledge from her as well, she was open to answering all the questions i threw at her....and there were a lot. One thing I think that you get from a Mary Walker clinic that you don't get from some of the others is a feeling of hey I can do this too. She spends some time going over her story and really when you hear it all it leaves you with a feeling of anyone can do this.....she overcame so many obstacles and if she did it with the obstqcles in her way , well I better not have any excuses. For those struggling with some physical or mental aspects of the sport that part really helped me . She gives criticism but always in a constructive way. No crying at this clinic lol .i have been to multiple clinics over the years. I have taken something from every one of them although some I wouldn't take again. What I liked most about this one is that it wasn't structured for everyone to fit a certain mold of how to do it. My biggest complaint would be that it wasn't longer. It was 2 days , 3 would have been ideal . They were long days, Mary went over time both days to make sure everyone got their share of what they needed.

No, but Flit was saying to consider her over Mary because she had brought more horses thanone to the NFR. I llove Kristen Weaver Brown and she only took one horse to the NFR. A horse that she did not train. I have been to a Janet Stover clinic and liked it. I have even been to a Bo Hill demonstration and loved it. I learned a ton of information. I don't think that anyone can gauge what you can learn from someone else and what you can't

One more thing to consider is how long do their horses last? The girls who didn't train their horses, but can keep them competing year in and year out certainly have a lot to teach. Keeping a horse going at a high level for years is a skill. I buy a horse to keep for the long haul. I am a terrible sales person, so it is very important to me to learn the different ways to keep them fit, happy and healthy and working correct

porky - 2015-11-15 12:43 AM I put on a Mary Walker clinic in my hometown this summer.

Thankyou!!

FLITASTIC - 2015-11-14 12:36 PM Before you attend any clinic, ask yourself how many high quality , top performing barrel horses has the clinician trained???? How many has Mary trained? Did she train Latte? There are a lot of commercialized clinicians out there. Sharon Camarillo went to the NFR on ONE horse but has made millions on clinics. How many Sharon Camarillo horses do see going down the road or have ever gone down the road? Compare that to say Sheri Cervi or Danyelle Campbell etc. How many has Lynn McKenzie trained? Lol just ask yourself those questions before you sign up.
Very good advice here

I somewhat disagree here.  Not everyone that can 'train' horses can 'train' people.  If you are looking for help to train a horse, go to a 'trainer' led clinic.  BUT, training a horse and jockeying a horse are two different animals.  There are some riders out there that can jockey the HELL out of a horse and if you just bought a 1D horse, maybe that is who you should look for.  There is the whole mental game of barrel racing that a 'jockey' clinician can help you with that a 'trainer' clinician may not have in her pocket.  There's no question Mary is a competitor and knows how to get the job done.

I guess it all boils down to what you are looking to get out of a clinic.  I think there is something that can be learned from anyone out there - so long as they know how to 'teach' it!

Well you know that pretty well eliminates everyone but Martha Josey. She has been to the NFR in 4 different decades on many different horses. That she trained by the way. She has been successful in futurities on horses that she trained because she used to bring her young horse to local barrel races. She has run multiple horses at the AQHA world show and has won the NBHA World Show. Many of the top barrel racers in the US have attended her clinics.

I will say this. What you get out of ANY clinic is directly related to what you put into it. If you go to learn something and you learn one thing then you have gotten your money's worth. If you go to a clinic with the attitude that your way works best and you already know everything, you may as well save your money.

Everybody needs a clinic once in a while and if the only clinic available in you area is not your first choice, I would say seize the moment and go. You may not have another opportunity.

By the way, Lynn McKenzie has had quite a few very good futurity horse. Missle started out as a futurity horse. (That belong to a client, I might add) I run against her daughters and they are pretty tough. I might add that Lynn does go over tips for mental preparation before a run, at least she did 40 years ago.

Sorry but I still think Flit gave some really good advice.
