Common Sense and then some
Location: So. California | Can you all spare a few prayers for Three*C*Champs please. Her gelding Cowboy has been at the clinic with colitis for the last few days, stable but critical condition. Last update was he nibbled a little at his hay, not worse/not better and certainly not out of the woods yet.
She is one of the nicest, sweetest gals you ever want to meet in person. And I know she would really appreciate your kind thoughts and prayers.

Location: So. Cali. | I can not begin to thank everyone enough for taking the time to send a prayer for my beloved Cowboy. And thnak you Anniemae for your kind words and starting this thread.
Cowboy is fighting and slowly and surely improving. We do not yet know the underlining cause of the colitis, waiting on fecal samples to come back. He has been at the clinic since late Thursday night/early Friday morning. Cowboy is a huge part of the reason I'm the rider and horse owner I am today. He is priceless to myself and my family and as long as he is fighting we will give him every oppurunity to overcome this.
As of this mornings update his diaherra was improving, and his protein, hydration, etc. levels are remaining stable. He was showing some pulses in his front feet last night, they have been keeping them iced as a precaution, but last night was the first sign of any possible issues. They were going to further evaluate him today to see how he is moving. More than anything right now he wants out of that stall and hasn't had much of an apetite.
This was from my visit with him Saturday

And this was from yesterday, him hoping to sneak out the side door. I will be headed there after work today to sit with him and hope to help him feel a bit more comfortable there.

Location: So. Cali. | Thank you everyone for the continued prayers. I went to see Cowboy after work last night, got a bit of devastating news on my way there and it was a rather emotional evening and was too exhausted to update once home. However, this morning's update was a huge weight off my chest, per results Cowboy is having his best day yet since being admitted there. Unforunately we have a bit of a rough road ahead of us, but as long as he fights, we will continue to too.

Location: So. Cali. | I guess the saying of 'It's has to get bad before it can get good' is true. Monday wasn't a very good day for him. He hadnt made much improvement, was extremely sore to walk around his stall and they were fearing laminitis, and we found out he was battling more than just colitis. I stayed with him quite a while Monday night while he ate as he hardly had been eating for the staff. I had fear we were going to have to make a decision soon. Apparently, Cowboy still has some fight left in him. Tuesday morning he made a huge turn around and has carried the positive improvements into today thus far! I wasnt able to make it down to see him after work yesterday, however my mom drove down in the afternoon and visited with him. I will be going to visit with him again this evening and bring him more goodies from home. I have hope he is not going to let us all down.
Thank you for the continued thoughts & prayers

He had another really good day yesterday with big improvements in his blood work and hydration level and his appetite! They decreased his IV Fluids to half last night and he was still holding a good hydration level with that. Awaiting this mornings update.

He was on a 1/4 of the amount of fluids than he's been on and still holding a good hydration level. As of today they were going to stop antibiotics and continue decreasing his fluids inhopes to prep him to come home!!! His appetite is much better as well!!

Yeah isn't it 5 consecutive negative tests before they are considered over it? at least in TX thats what it is. they shed intermittently which is why you have to have a series of negatives. |

Salmonella is everywhere, there's a gazillion reasons why horses can get it.. just being a horse in general puts them at risk. |

He's going on day 12 of being home. We had to have our local vet come back by last week as his stool was getting a bit looser than comfort for us. Gave him some more bio-sponge and put him on another round of antibiotics. That has thankfully been his only 'bad' day. He's still getting around a bit slow, he wasnt sound to begin with and I know standing in that stall for 9 days was hard on him so this is expected. His edema has gone and you can now see the toll fighting this illness has taken on his body score. However, we have him on a good diet and I know it he will look as good as new again. I am just thankfully he got to come home.

Sorry to just respond. The discharge paperwork the hospital sent me home with advises 3 negative tests. We were going to send in one after the first week, however because he had a 'bad' day, we decided to wait a bit longer.

Yes, unforunately salmonella is everywhere. Prior to this experience I had no idea horses could even get it! It's only passed by fecal, but couldve come from rodent, bird, or another horse. Cowboy hasnt been to a race in months, I wouldve expected my colt to have gotten sick before him, but as always you just never know.
I am going to have my mare Tilly tested, she was stalled next to Cowboy and although she hasnt shown any symptoms, horses can be carries and never actually have a 'symptom' and since she is coming 8 months infoal I'd rather be safe and have some piece of mind.

Considering what he has gone thru he looks pretty darn good, great care will do that :-) Hope he is continuing on his road to recovery with few speed bumps. |

Wanted to update everyone!! Cowboy has now been home 2 months and passed his third and final test as Salmonella Negative. Saturday he got to be turned out in the arena for the first time since being in the hospital and have contact with all the other horses. He is now stalled back with everyone again as well. Below is a short video of his turn out time. THANK YOU EVERYONE SO MUCH!!https://www.facebook.com/christina.swan.56/videos/vb.1278517140/10204969907988937/?type=3&theater
