I have a new horse and she is not so good about picking up her feet. I'm used to working with horses on this but it's been a while...also, when I go to pick up her back feet, she leans all her weight into me and almost swings her butt towards me.. it's getting better but not great. She also won't hold her foot up long and tries to jerk it out of my hands, I've been just asking for a little and when she gives releasing and getting after her when she swings her butt into me but when she leans into the foot that I'm trying to pick it, it makes it about impossible for me to lift without hurting my back! she's better when I use a rope to pick up her foot which to me seems weird.

Horses will keep leaning if there is something supporting them, ie you.

If I have one that is leaning, I will drop the foot, poke them in the belly, give them a smack to get them to stand square.

If they get to leaning to much on me..(as I'm getting out of their way) I just flat drop the foot and make them almost fall down.

Good advice! I haven't dropped her foot but I guess I should, I have been smacking her in the butt to get her to move off me but I like this advice!
