Location: Louisiana | Sooo, we haven't been watching ANY tv since moving into our new home. But with the NFR coming up, hubby said it's time lol. We're pretty rural and our main options are DirecTV and Dish. Can't do anything that requires internet as we don't have that either. What do y'all like best? Service, PRICE, channel options, etc. We do want a DVR, and only have one TV, so no extra room charges. Tell me about those hidden fees lol |

| I would check out which offers the channels you like. Cost for HD. What other features are necessary to you. |

Location: In the Hills of Texas | We had DirecTV for about 15 years and when we needed new equipment they wanted to charge me $200.00. Went to Dish and as soon as I cancelled the DirectTV they offered me every thing free. Too late...Ticked us off that we had been a customer for so long and did auto pay and even after talking to a few different people that they waited until we cancelled before they would take care of us. |

| I had to sign up for a channel i didn't have on my Direct TV package to watch the Breeders' Cup races. It's the same channel they're going to have the NFR on so I'm going to wait until after the NFR to cancel the channel. I've had both Direct and Dish and I prefer Dish, but cross wise on them on a bill so switched to Direct TV. |

Location: Probably On the Road to the Next Barrel Race! | Well, let me tell you about Direct...I had Dish for years and was happy. I was suckered into Direct TV with AUTODRAFT. HUGE mistake. I checked my bill one month. and they had added a premium sports channel for an extra $59/mo, and had been doing so for 4 months. They had to credit me, after I spent a LONG time on hold...they KEPT doing stuff just like this, so when my 2 years was up last month...BOOM I dropped them like a hot potato. Honest to God, I believe they are crooks and thieves...Dish never did that to me... |

| What angers me is neither of them do anything special for long term customers. All of the great offers are to new customers. The best bet might be to switch every 6 months!! We have been with Directv for ages. |

Dish just did this to us. We were with them for 10 yrs. As soon as we switched to Direct they wanted to offer us all these free things and upgrades. It was the upgrades we had wanted when I first called. I am all for switching back and forth. That is the only way to keep up with the current upgrades. As soon as your yr or 2 of discounted month service is over, see if they will extend it and if not, just switch. There is no loyalty in TV companies. |

| I guess I'm the odd man out here. When ever I talk to Direct tv thay are always telling me that we are up for free upgrades. I don't have the auto pay so haven't had to worry about the over charges. Our oldest son had trouble with Dish and went to Direct while our youngest just switched over to Dish so go figure, 6 one 1/2 dozen the other. lol |

This is our rant too. We started off with Direct and had good luck for several yrs. A lightning storm took out our dish. We still got a few channels but not all that we were paying for. They came out and took a look and said we were SOL. In the time it took them to mess around and figure out the issue, they could have put up a new satellite.
So with Dish we liked them for yrs and then it seemed every 3 months the price was going up. Just $4 here and there. But by the time they were done we had a middle of the road package and were paying $80 a month. The kicker was our equipment was so dang old the DVR wasn't working 1/2 the time. It kept dumping all the shows we had recorded. So I asked them to upgrade, they said no. So I said see ya...until this last contract is over and service gets crappy. |

When we where with direct there equipment was old and kept going out. Switchimg with dish best thing i did. I will call in a month or so jew then down again. |

Location: South of Canada and North of Mexico | We have two accounts with Directv, the main one mine since 2006. We have had no issues persay, you never wait on hold for very long if you call them, never had a bad experience with customer service. Yes they will try to talk you into program upgrades for being a "loyal" customer, if its for 3 months or 6 months make sure you call to cancel it otherwise they tack it onto your bill, yep had that happen like twice. Directv you can suspend your service if need be, I cant remember if its 3 or 6 months? But we have done that on my husbands account when he is home and not at the camper. My bill is like $115 a month and his is 180 but he has NHL Center Ice and NFL Sunday Ticket (also if you dont want it the next year cancel that too). The NFR should be back on CBS Sports Network? I have that channel on my package, I think Total?? Anyways we love Directv. |

I agree with you on nothing for long term customers. I have had Direct TV since 1997 also. I have paid for everything, dish, receivers all of it. When my bill got up to $125, I çalled to cancel. The cut my bill in half, guaranteed for two years. I guess I will stick with them for awhile |

I hardly EVER watch TV but this IS what we do! We switch everytime our contract is up. (I wouldn't if it was up to me but my SO doesn't mind boxing up all the crap and sending it back) - BOTH of them treat "new" customers SO much better, so we get REAL cheap TV for about 6 months, then both of them go up. I prefer Direct because I like their menu better but really they are both the same. |

We do this too! Threaten to switch and they will cut your bill or throw in movie channels. |
