Whats the difference between them? My 5 are usually stalled most of the time in the winter except for a few hours in the evenings but since we moved to our new place they have been out from morning until dark and I would like to keep it that way this winter, I have 2 that I blanket but Ive never had them outside with one on. Is it safe? I dont know the differences between a stable blanket and a turnout blanket? Is one more secure? More durable?

Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Stable blankets are generally not water proof/resistant.  Turnouts are.

The turn-out blankets will have gussets on the shoulder, making it easier for the horses to run around. The blankets won't rub their shoulders.

Most turnouts are waterproof, are available in a stronger denier, and have more straps to keep them in place when horses are moving more.

If they are outside in the elements at all- I would use a turnout. They are waterproof and made for a moving horse. Stable blankets are usually for indoors only.

What everyone said... your turnouts are going to have higher denier / rip stop capability for more wear/tear. They will also be water proof and designed for more motion.

Stable blankets will not be resilient if snagged or tugged on. They shred pretty easily. They also arent waterproof and will waterlog super bad if gotten wet. They also dont usually have tail flips or shoulder gussets.

I have 1 stable blanket but I only use it under a waterproof sheet/turnout when I am desperate. Everything else I have it a turnout.

Just a added word.....not all turnout blankets are water proof. Some are water resistant which will get soaked after a short period of time. So make sure you get waterPROOF and at least 1200 denier. 1600 denier is better yet.

Blankets that are water proof are only water proof when you buy them, over time they become more susceptible to the elements.

There is water proofing spray people can buy, costs 20/bottle, does three blankets, it actually waterproofed my bot sheets better then my friends rain sheets.

The best turn outs are water PROOF, breathable and have a high denier (1200 or up) as well as shoulder gussets and sturdy rear leg straps. Schneider's has really nice blankets and many options for turn outs. www.sstack.com
I have several of their turn outs that I've been using for over 10 years.
