Location: SK | Looking to add some new drils into my riding routine. Not a young horse and not really a seasoned horse. Definitely does not have to include the barrels, and minimal equipment would be best! Let me know what you like! TIA! Well broke horse just looking to give him (and me lol!) more routine in our rides and have some specific things to work on that he won't get bored doing our same drills, a change never hurt anyone! |

Location: The Great Northwest | Changing up the exercise routine is good. Try doing the old fast or with more zip. You could do more backing striaght and with circles, stop or transitions by your seat with correct response from light rein, work in a circle and counter circle keeping same lead, side pass and back in circles. These help to relax a foreward horse. There are so many variations of exercises to keep your horse broke. I hope some others will state some of their exercises. |

6-8 barrels- Funnel barrels. And doing the pole pattern.
And all left and then all right. |

Location: Where the long tails flow, ND | I love the straight barrel drill, all one direction, then switch directions all in a straight line. Number of barrels doesn't matter so that is nice!
Also, I learned at a Brandi Halls clinic to set a barrel pattern up then switch up how you approach the pattern. Pick a different 1st barrel each time and complete the pattern. This gets them really listening to you and hunting barrels .

I believe the square drill is where you can trot a big (or smaller) square, pretty much. Trot in a straight lines and when you get to a corner you turn it quickly and onto that next straight line as possible. Or you could stop at those corners, ask your horse to move his shoulders toward the next straight line and ask him to walk or trot from there. I'm sure horses can do it at a lope but mine gets too hot. PLay with your horse and see what he likes |

I also do this drill but with tires instead of barrels. You are then able to work on perfecting your turns without them assiociating it to a "barrel" pattern. Like my horse, he's 9 this year and knows his job, so when he sees a barrel he wants to turn it. At least with a tire, he has to listen to me and my body to tell him what to do and when to do it. Ill also use this same set up to turn one tire with a soft supple horse then figure 8 and counter arch the next tire while being soft. Only going to the next barrel if they are listening to you and stay soft and supple. One of my favorite drills! I also work a pole pattern with less space inbetween poles to really get him soft and listening to me.

This is the square drill I do, you literally make a square around the barrels. Super helpful to make your turns super snappy, and keep the horse collected and up underneath himself. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Not really so much a drill but a good way to make sure you have ones mind and your hand and feet are working together, from an Ed clinic. Regular 360 turn, counter arc 360 turn, stop and back up using one rein. |

It really teaches them to rate and listen to you, and helps them learn to finish a turn.

I just tried the 4 barrel drill Monday and let me tell you, I love it....keeps horse honest if rider keeps horse honest and definitely worked to convince me that I can ride harder to that barrel, which is something I struggle with. Both horse and I were puffing when we were done! |

You can counter arc half circle around one and then complete the circle on the next one, counter arch around the next, etc... Keeps shoulder up, makes them move off your feet.. |
