Location: Middle TN | UPDATE: Willa is not doing well. She is at a larger vet clinic in Murfreesboro TN. They believe that she has an infection that is now in her bloodstream. She is on IV Fluid and Antibiotics and has drains in several of the wounds. They have confirmed based on the types of bacteria they have discovered that she was attacked by an animal of some sort. She is very weak. They are doing all they can but are sounding less and less optimistic about a full recovery at this time. All we can do is pray now. She is young and healthy and has a heart of gold. Just maybe she can fight this off and pull through! I have hope.
(Sorry Long)
We came home last night to find our 2 year old aussie standing on the porch in shock, covered in what looked like pond mud, and dripping blood. My initial first thought was to bathe her to examine the severity of her injuries but she refused to move and acted as though her hips were injured. She wasn't aggressive but I could see that she was not herself at all, obviously in pain. I decided against a bath and tried to reach a vet that would make a house call. Of course none of the local vets were available and one told me to bring her in first thing this morning. With a sick 10 month old baby and the closest emergency vet at least an hour away I didn't have much choice but to make her as comfortable as possible and take her in this morning. We coaxed her into laying down, which looked terrible painful, but she eventually did and seems relieved after a few minutes off her feet. She didn't move all night long. I couldn't sleep a wink between checking on my little boy and her alternately through the night.
Fast forward to this morning, which seemed to take an eternity. I take her in to the vet, he was initially concerned about her hips and spine and seemed convinced that she must have gotten run over. They ran x-rays, which came back negative for any type of spinal, hip, or leg injuries. Upon more thorough examination, trying to determine where the blood had come from (she is long haired and between the hair matted with blood and mud, it was difficult to find the source) he found several (5-6) dime sized puncture wounds, all on her underside, except for the 2 on her rear end. He ruled out gun shot wounds from the x-rays and the only conclusion he could come to was that she had gotten into a fight with some other dogs.
I'm having a hard time believing that being the cause. I would think that if one or several dogs were after her, they would go for the throat. All of her injuries, other than facial lacerations, are from her front legs to the rear. The possibility of bobcat, panther, or cougar have come up, but I'm not sure she would have survived something like that. Someone even mentioned that maybe it could have been a buck.. unlikely, but I googled it and I suppose its possible. The other possible option and most disgusting, is if a person did this to her.. I can't even imagine what or how they would have done this. I don't even want to think about it. I just want her better.
My little boy (10 months old) is confused as to why she isn't playing with him today and why he cant climb on her or pet her. They are best friends. Her name was his first word and remains to be his most frequently used word (wee-waa). I hope that she fully recovers! She was prescribed Anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic and is resting.
Please just send up a little prayer for her and my little family today!
Thank you (:
ETA some pictures of Willa!

Location: Middle TN | We do have several ponds, but no gators here! That was my thought as well with the cats. I have seen the result of them clawing a hole in a large dogs side and also tearing out a filly's throat. I'm not convinced that it was another animal :( the placement of the wounds, the size and round shape of them, and the distance between them just don't seem consistent with something another animal could do. |

Location: Georgia | Keeping Willa in my prayers! We came home to a similar situation with my heeler. He had blood all over his head, tongue swollen so much he could barely breathe, wouldnt move and was clearly in shock. Rushed him to an after-hours vet and after x-rays it was concluded someone had loaded birdshot into his head. I was in complete disbelief that someone would do such a thing! This is not an aggressive dog. I honestly thought he was going to die that night. It was a rough few weeks but he made it. He lost vision in one of his eyes but other than that, he fully recovered. Its been 4 years and he is still going strong. Willa will be fine! Just give her some time to get over whatever it is that happened to her. |

Thank you so much! & thank you for sharing your story also. I'm so thankful it wasn't much, much worse, but I will definitely be keeping a closer eye on her. She had made friends with all the neighbors between mine and my moms house and even went to a pool party down the rd over the summer and came home late with glowstick necklaces lol. She's just a sweet loving, compassionate girl and I can't imagine why anyone would hurt her.

I would like to think her injuries were caused by some other animal, but the way you describe them also lead me to believe they were inflicted on her by someone. People are so cruel. I dont understand it. Makes you want to lock up your animals and never let me out of your sight. She sounds like a sweetheart!

We have barn dogs that have been in hellacious fights with coyotes and wild hogs so we now have them locked in the barn/arena. We only let them out under supervision. They go and ride with me on the trails and stay pretty close to me most of the time. Wild animals can be vicious. Hope your girl heals up soon. |

Thank you, she does seem to be feeling some better with the medication. & Yes we have a large fenced in yard that she will now stay in unless we are around. I understand that animals will get into situations with other animals, but I hate that feeling that this wasn't one of those situations. I have grown up in this same area and have only once had a dog get shot for no reason, but as far as I know that person is nowhere around anymore. It breaks my heart having to confine her, she plays with the neighbors kids, and hangs out with the elderly couple down the rd while they are in their garden or going for walks. We are a very close-nit little community. The only outside people that come into our area are the few that grew-up near-by and know of the lake access that my rd dead ends into.

Sounds like to me she got into a fight with another dog, if it was a large cat she would have been riped up and with cuts and the cats will go for the throat, dogs will cause puncture wounds mostley. I'm betting her muscles are really sore were she got all her puncture wounds, and it will take more then a few days befor she gets to feeling good enought to move around. |

What about a coon? My daddy's dog got into a fight with a huge coon about 2 months ago on the edge of one of our fish ponds and they killed each other--drowned. Rastus was missing for 3 days and we all hunted everywhere for him. My uncle found him at the back of our property in a pond. When Chandler and Daddy went to get him to bury him, that's when they found the coon. We were devastated, but Daddy said at least he took the coon out too. . .

Location: Middle TN | Willa is very sore today but enjoyed her bath last night. When her wounds heal up better, I will have to probably cut some of the burrs out of her fur, I didn't even realize how bad and how many of them she had gotten until her bath. I was able to get several out with the water and soap but a lot of them just are not coming out without getting cut out :( She had to have been running from something to have gotten so many burrs :(
We have come across a new possibility for the puncture wounds. We got word that someone in the area has been putting out "dirt traps" to capture coyotes and I guess other types of wildlife. These traps are holes dug a few feet-several feet deep with stakes of some sort placed to inflict injury to wound or possibly kill the animal that gets trapped. I'm not sure that this is legal, and I have contacted our local wildlife agency in regards to this, as the traps have been placed on government land and more than likely on private property as well.
All I can think now is what if someone, or myself came up on something like this while riding our horses, or even just going for a walk? This is absolutely terrifying. |

Location: Somewhere between raising hell and Amazing Grace | Yes, it does sound like a dog fight. I witnessed the neighbors 5 dogs attack one of my Aussies several years ago. Had it not been for my mastiff breaking it up who knows what would have happened. He had puncture wounds all over, chest, belly, back, rump. And they did not appear like bites as they were each a single puncture. But obviously I knew they were. We ended up having to put drains in and he healed great. But he was HORRIBLY body sore for a few days.
I bet she got jumped by several dogs, possibly even coyotes. Is she current on rabies? Tetanus?
Prayers for a speedy recovery!!! |

I will add that I have a dog that goes for the stomache. I had one witch of a dog. She would start fights for nothing. Well she jumped my sister's heeler mix one day, that poor dog didn't have a mean bone in her body and didn't have a chance. My male jumped in and went for the stomach and ripped her up pretty good before we could get in the yard and get it stopped. It never fails, if 2 dogs are fighting he is going for the gut of the dog that is losing. It doesn't matter if the losing dog is his buddy or not, he is going to cheap shot them. The heeler's marks on her stomach didn't look like bite marks either. Just a long laceration and some punctures. Not sure what it would have looked like if we hadn't stopped it. |

Thank you for the input! We did find some more smaller holes that do look much more like tooth marks on her rump and back. She seems to be doing much better each day, still very sore & pitiful. |

Wow! They sound like my mom's dogs. She has a female coyote mix that is now too old, but has trained all of the pups through the years to hunt, but also keep ANY outside dogs away. My little sisters pit bull has gone after Willa several time, but ALWAYS goes for the throat; She intends to kill and Willa is SOOO submissive.. We do have occasional strays and several strays actually run with the coyotes in the area, so it is extremely possible that she got mixed up with some mean wild dogs. I'm just so grateful that she survived and was able to get home so we could get her the care she needed! |

| Oh no, I am so sorry. Our yorkie-poo survived a coyote attack. We moved her to a specialty clinic, many $$ later she survived. Prayers your Willa does the same. The specialty clinic did exploratory surgery to be sure her stomach was not punctured, which was not. Hope you get to visit and stay with your Willa some. |

Thank you. I will hopefully get to see her tomorrow. I'm on my last of 3, 12 hour shifts today. A family friend has been staying by her side for us and keeping us updated. We miss her very much, but know that she is in great hands! |

  Location: Middle TN | UPDATE:
Willa is hanging in there. She has had to have damaged/infected tissue removed from around and inside several of the wounds. She has lost some weight, but has began eating and drinking on her own again. One of the vet techs has offered to take her in for us for close monitoring and wound care due to our work schedules not allowing us to provide the care she needs right now. She is in great hands. The vet tech seems more optimistic than the vet himself. Willa is much more comfortable getting to be in an actual home and away from the vet office atmosphere. We are keeping faith and hoping and praying for a full recovery. It is possible! What a Christmas gift that would be to have her on the mend and at home with us to watch her "person" open his gifts on his 1st Christmas morning!
Thank you so much for your continued thoughts and prayers! They mean so much (: |

I agree, a sweet soul, no doubt & an angel for our Willa! She will never know how truly grateful we are for her and what she has done to help us save Willa, regardless of the outcome, we will be eternally thankful for her. |

Wow what a awesome vet tech, this warms my heart that you have someone like this working for the Vet you use. There is such good people that love animals as much as we love them. many prayers for Willa |

| Continued prayers, kudos the vet tech! So glad Willa is recovering in a home. I had a cat that was caught in a car engine, he stayed at the vet a week, wounds healing but would not eat. I decided to bring him home and he immediately started eating. |

I'm so glad you updated us, been praying for sweet Willa. It's wonderful when we know the vets and the techs care about our animals as much as we do. I hope your family's early Christmas gift is Willa lying by the tree pain free before you know it. |

Location: Middle TN | Kind of a bittersweet update:
First of all, I would like to let you all know that there was a bobcat captured in a trap this week about 1/2 mile from my house. It is very likely that this cat, or its relatives were responsible for Willa's injuries.
Willa is still hanging in there. They are talking about a blood transfusion now. She still has a LONG LONG road ahead of her. She is pitiful to look at, but does not seem to be in pain and is somewhat playing and is eating and drinking on her own.
I want to tell a little story about Willa, about her life, before I tell where this is going:
Willa was born with a purpose, she was bred to be a service dog. The family that picked her needed her very very much, as they had an infant with seizures. Willa was never intended to be a pet, she was a caretaker, an alert system, a saving grace for this family. Unfortunately, the baby did not survive. The family was distraught and decided to let Willa go. Some where along the line she ended up with the sweet lady who re-homed her with me. It was perfect, my little boy was only a few months old and they shared an instant bond. She never left his side. He is a healthy baby, therefore Willa has gotten to be a normal dog, a pet for the time she has spent with us.
Now, the sweet, sweet angel of a vet tech that has taken in and has been caring for Willa 24/7 is an epileptic. Her service dog was attacked by a pack of dogs earlier this year and did not make it. She and Willa have developed a bond, a special one. Anyone that sees them together can see that Willa is as dedicated to this lady as much as this lady is dedicated to her.
I have made the decision to offer for her to keep Willa. As I expected, she accepted right away. I am absolutely heartbroken but deep down I feel that I have made the right decision. I feel like I was a temporary safe haven and chance for Willa to experience normal dog life and through all the recent tragedy, we were led into the perfect scenario, the perfect match. Willa is no doubt a once in a lifetime dog. I don't know that I will EVER be able to replace her, and I have no drive to even try at this point. My little boy still asks for her and looks for her to come running with her ball to play when we go outside. It makes me feel terrible, but I know that when he is old enough to understand that he will be proud of the decision I made and proud that we were able to help Willa and the vet tech meet each other.
Thank you all so so so much for your thoughts and prayers, she still needs them! |

Location: Arkansas | Doesn't our God work in mysterious ways?? He had a purpose and path for Willa, you, your son, and that special tech. My goosebumps have goosebumps----I agree you will be blessed beyond measure by your actions. This will show your son, when he's old enough, what it means to have a pure and loving heart. And what more can a child hope for than to have that in his momma. . . . What a special Christmas story you've shared with us. I thank you |
