What are the best places to look for used trailers in TX? Websites or dealerships? We are going to the NCHA Futurity this weekend and can look at dealerships around Ft Worth. We are looking for a 6 horse with midtack and mangers. Thanks!

I have heard some negative things about the quality of Featherlite. Anybody have thoughts on that?

Also, what about Sundowner? I realize it probably isn't the best, but I want to stay away from poor quality. Specifically this trailer. Anyone have insight about the quality this model? Thanks.

Never have heard anything super negative about Sundowner except their LQ are poor quality and be careful not to twist the axles (that is the only negative thing i have heard)
Featherlite is a poor quality trailer in my book.
We had a 6 horse Hart and it was HEAVY for a narrow trailer without LQ.

Call NRS Trailers in Decatur Texas (West of DFW) and ask for Chance. He is a good guy and nice to work with. We have bought two trailers from him. The owner Mike is a super nice guy as well.

Additional question:

Anyone know how much weight living quarters add per foot? Looking at a 34 ft aluminum trailer with 9 ft living quarters. It's a six horse. Trying to figure how much it will weigh empty and loaded. Will a one ton dually pull okay?

I have a 2005 Sundowner six horse and it is not super well made, but it has held up decent.  We also have a 1998 Hart that has been used HARD and it is in much better condition because it is a better quality trailer.

My main gripe with the Sundowner is the black "suncoat" they put on the frame and the floor.  It doesn't adhere worth a crap so you get lots of moisture between the coating and the metal and get really bad rust/corosion even though it looks fine from the outside.  I will not buy another Sundowner.

We have a Sundowner, 4 horse LQ. We love it. We not only travel with the horses, but we also take it to the deer camp for a month and use it as our camper.

I've had a sundowner and an elite.. I will never own another brand of trailers, besides elite. I just cannot get over how well made my trailer is made. We haven't had 1 problem with it in 4 years and have had offers on it for more than it's price brand new.

I understand though that what you are looking for isn't gonna give you a lot of choices, but I will say if you are okay with having to replace pretty regularily, then the sundowner will be okay. It's not poorly made and the important stuff is of quality but its the little things you don't think about that don't hold up, like handles and padding.

I strongly suggest looking for elite, platinum or hart trailers.. even if you have to go a few years older. It will just be less stressful in the long run, IMO.

eta: how important is the mid tack?

Thanks for the help. Yes, we are pretty specific on what is needed. 6 horse, mangers and midtack is a must as we haul a lot of tack and supplies, often.

We have a budget and so looking for used. Not too many choices out there :)

Give D&D a call in the trailer sales, they have quite a bit of trailers out in their lot new and used most are your really nice high end trailers. They are here in Seguin Texas..

Frankly, you can just walk around the parking lot and find for sale signs in the trailers there.  A lot of trainers trade and take their's there to sale.

pull it yes - STOP it, heck no.

Something that size I'd be looking at the mini semi's and "haulers" for that amount of weight.

If you go searching through the Horse Trailer World forums, look for Guard. He is a guy who has a TON of knowledge and can answer lots of specific questions. Also, there are lots of posts about specific models and years of trailers to stay away from.

Very well made trailers. In fact, I've been told the earier models are better than the new ones.

There are a few trailer dealers right on I-20 in Weatherford.

We own a Hart. We absolutely love it! They have a used 6 horse on Stephenville Truck and Trailer website. We have used Ty Andrew many times. Highly recommend them. They also service and stand behind their trailers. We've had a few minor problems with a few things, they've fixed it without charge. They work you in around your schedule and fix the problem.

Don't tempt me to look at that one again....what a nice trailer. Too rich for my blood, though :(

I am in and around the 30k range

You might give Longhorn Trailer Sales in Mt. Pleasant a call. They have a lot of trailers. A lot.

The closest thing I can see on their site is an 01 Bloomer 7H w/ 10'SW for $44,900... but they very well could have something you want that's just not made it to the site yet.

We pulled a 6 horse Cimmaron with 9 ft LQ, mid tack with a dually, had no problems.    I sold it a few years ago and down sized to a 4 horse.

I looked on HorseTrailerWorld for several months, but found the perfect used trailer for us. A four horse with four foot short wall dressing room Sooner-barely used. The price was right-we drove about 250 miles, bought it and pulled it home.
