I've read so many posts on draw gags and seen so many options. So my curiosity is peaked and I'd like to know some opinions. (Yes I have used a loomis gag and quite like how my mare works in it.)
When do you decided to use a draw gag? How do you choose which option to use (Ie draw bit with no extra gag, draw bit with gag action on mouth piece, and all the different mouth options)? Pretty much your whole thought process.

I typically reach for one when I need more bend and lift. I also use one to introduce a colt to poll pressure and gag. I don't really like to run in one because there's no relief until you give it. I use them quite often to tune one up though. I really haven't ever found a horse that didn't like a draw gag. It's a pretty friendly bit when used properly. I like my smooth mouth loomis the most, but I also have a d-ring double gag with a twisted dog bone mouthpiece. I've used it on 2 different horses and they really liked it. I think it works better on a stiffer light mouthed horse (if that makes sense). The loomis is definitely the most versatile. I think I could use it on about anything. I wish I had a twisted wire one.
