As the NFR begins tonight all eyes are on Las Vegas. I often wonder what it is like to be a contestant there. You realize how busy their schedules are when following some of your favorite althetes on social media. We get a better glimpse now more than ever of what goes on behind the scenes. I had a hard time packing my wardrobe for a 1 weekend long ameture rodeo finals. Could you imagine packing up for Vegas for 10 days and endless appearances. How in the world do they keep up with it all. Not to mention they have to make time to take care of their animal athletes. If you know interesting facts about what its like behind the scenes post below :).

I was interested to learn they practice the grand entry 8-10 times Announcer, music, the whole 9.

Lots of family and friends help take care of the details, keeping them on schedule, clothes ready, helping taking care of their horses.

I would imagine it takes a village lol. Also I am loving the ephasis on fashion at the finals this year. Facebook pages like The Bleacher Babe, and Tuffs girlfriend "Fashion Posse" post pics of what everyone is wearing at events. Rodeo fashion is unique, and I love that it is being noticed.

Aren't most contestants given a room by some of the larger hotels and sponsors? Does anyone actually stay in their trailer?

I know you get jackets, spurs, and other items for qualifying. Buckles for go round wins. Aren't saddles awarded too? I could have sworn I saw pics last year featuring barrel racers with trophy saddles (other than the average, and champ).

Do they bring their own grand entry horse or are they provided one?

I know the barrel racers also bring gifts for the other qualifiers.

All top 15 do get a saddle, but I'm not sure if they're donated or what... but they seem to match up pretty well with the riders so I assume they get to have some say in picking them out.

I believe they bring their own grand entry horse, but I'm not 100% certain.

I am constantly checking my Instagram and Snapchat for updates.. it's so intriguing!!

The amount of items they get is a lot!   Taylor Jacobs posted that she did not have room in her trailer to get it all home.   Well deserved if you make the long haul throughout the year to qualify for the NFR.

Regardless of how much help they have, their schedule is so full they get very tired out. (I was part of the "village" a few times). They usually have to be up very early and often have multiple events they have to attend for their sponsors, the PRCA and the WPRA plus find time to do what needs to be done with their horses and then get through the traffic to Thomas & Mack. We usually didn't get back to the place where we were staying until well after midnight and sometime later if they win the round.  The veterans have a better grasp of how to use their time, but it can be overwhelming for a rookie. The person I was with chose not to keep her horses there to allow them to get better rest and be away from those that could possibly do them harm.

I bet it is exausting! I also wondered about on site security for the horses. Do they recieve some type of schedule to stick to or are they just responsible for managing their obligations on their own. I would have to hire an assistant ..or two. I imagine they are required to be in dress code at all times as well.

Saddles are donated and from what I recall they are given as a lottery type thing - so every saddle is different and donated by a different person/saddle maker. You don't get to "pick" who your saddle goes to, if memory serves.

Their entry fees are covered by the NFR Events sponsorships, also from memory, may have changed over the years and their rooms are comp'd as well.

Grand entry horses are often used by multiple people and swapped out when needed, for victory laps and the like.

If anyone knows more, feel free to jump in, what little I know I'm sharing.............

I've been glued to Fallon and Stormey's snap chat stories for like 4 days.

Edited to add it is hilarious that the WARMUP PEN is as major of a cluster at the NFR as it is everywhere else.

TyE - 2015-12-03 6:33 PM  I just don't get a woman's need to dress so scantily. Put some clothes on...the back number ceremony is R rated...how very very sad. My personal opinion.
I saw a ton of fashion posts on Facebook... Didn't see anyone dressed inappropriately IMO. They all looked gorgeous, barrel racing contestants, wives, girlfriends, everybody!
There were a few chesties (not any contestants) that could have used a bit of covering on a couple of the ones I saw. LOL  That of course is my personal opinion. The others were fine.

I see all of the family members holding back number signs. I wonder if they make them, or if these are provided/can be purchased. I think its cool to see all the custom back number jewelry also!

So I was honored with the chance to carry flags at the NFR this year. The amount of behind the scenes I got to see was AMAZING! There is so much you don't think about and actually being able to see it with my eyes was awesome. If anyone would like to know anything, ask away!!

I got to watch the early barrel practice as well as the grand entry practice. They only ran through the grand entry 3 or 4 times this year. The contestants had to enter and exit correctly and be done if they did, but yes announcers some of the music, etc. was all done at full speed the last time. There is good security on the grounds for the horses, but most of the barrel racers keep their horses elsewhere and they all have people there to help with chores. They are often up and at the trade shows as soon as they open for appearances and signings. I know many that cut off a couple hours before the rodeo so they can go to their room and rest before the rodeo.

Most of everything you see is your basic rodeo atmosphere. There are two warm up areas for everyone to use and the stall tents are located about a 1/2 mi back of the arena. Because the grounds are literally right next to the airport, it gets REALLY loud! Planes fly in day and night and at times you have to stop your conversation because you can't hear! Security is TIGHT! If you don't have credentials you do not get in anywhere. Lots of contestants haul in and out each night. Mostly barrel racers, but there really is a mix. Everyone is very very nice. All the barrel racers warm up in the outside arena and then come into the tent by the alley. Not all come up early, most of them stay back from the arena. Taylor, Fallon, Sarah, Vickie, and Michelle came up early almost every night. The opening acts are practiced every night after the rodeo for the next night. Most of the singers are not there to actually practice and anything to do with contestants we fill in for them.
