Location: Northwest Florida | My 6 month old pup passed away today without explanation. Has anyone had similiar experiences or have any idea what could have happened? I've worked as a vet tech and at a rescue and I have seen more than my fair share of parvo, worm infestations, poisonings... This just doesn't fit the bill to me and I am dumbfounded. She was a happy, healthy, 6 month old Australian Shepherd/Blue Heeler mix. Current on all vaccines, dewormings, well cared for. Today was no different than any other day. She was playing in the morning, her and my other dog had breakfast, went outside to use the bathroom (monitored, did not get into anything), came inside to play and all was normal. At 11 or so this morning I put them in their kennels (where they stay when home alone) and left for lunch and some errands. I returned at 330 to find her laying near lifeless in her kennel covered in diarrhea (not bloody, no mucous, just very watery stool). I tried to get her to raise her head, put some bacon in front of her nose and she didn't even acknowledge it. I called my boyfriend who was on his way home and we were going to rush her to the vet when he arrived. I went to change clothes and heard her last breaths. The cry/howl I've heard dogs and puppies make sometimes when euthanized. She passed away. She went from 100% normal to dead within 4 hours. I know it's possible to have an autopsy done on a dog but I don't want to go to that measure. We are going to bury her on the farm. Poor baby girl had such a short life and I don't understand this. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I lost my Australian Shepherd the same way a few months ago, she was fine when I let her onto the back porch went to a Dr. App. my son called me to tell me that Puppy {her name} was dying, I could not beleive what he was telling me. She was 8 years old, just died out of the blue. I was in shock to see my beautiful dog laying there dead.. So sorry that you lost your puppy... |

| I am so sorry for your loss, that is so devastating. Could it possibly have been something in the food? Not necessarily a poison, as I would assume your other dog would be sick too, but maybe she was allergic to something in it? |

I had that thought, but we buy the big bags, and she was already probably half way through it so I don't think that's possible. If it was a new bag I would definitely be considering that though |

Have you recently wormed horses and she ate poop?
Oh my goodness. I wormed one of mine with an Ivermectin dewormer about a week and a half ago. I knew you could not worm a herding or collie breed with Ivermectin but them eating horse poop has never even crossed my mind. She does go out in the pasture some and I'm sure she went out with my boyfriend last night because he fed horses while was at work. She usually stays close, but she has been caught with her face in poop piles in the past. I can't believe I've never considered that.
Ivermectin poisoning is not something I've ever witnessed. If she were to have ingested it last night, would she have been fine this morning and then it could've hit her suddenly while I was away? |

There are usually neurological symptoms that go along with it from what I've read.
I lost a Mcnab that way, fine then suddenly dead did the cry and everything. we made it to the vet at least and she didn't even respond to emergency treatment epi anything and it wasn't from eating dewormer. It turns out she had something going on with her heart... I don't remember exactly what it was but we had her examined after death.
DO NOT beat yourself up over this there's no way to know 100% what caused it and if you wormed over a week ago and she's been fine up to this point that probably wasn't even what it was. Just be happy she passed quickly from whatever it was and didn't have any prolonged suffering. prayers and hugs for you for peace |

Thank you so much, and I'm sorry about your baby as well.
I was also reading up on the side effects of Ivermectin poisoning and I don't think it matches well with what happened to her either. I've spent hours on google, and I just need to accept that even if I did find out exactly what happened it wouldn't change the fact that she's gone now.
Thank you everyone for your kind words. |

Location: Kansas | from what i've seen Parvo generally has bloody diaherra....my pup had parvo and her diaherra was laced with blood and had a nasty sweet smell. $500 later and she was treated.
Did your puppy get into posion by chance? Maybe someone threw treats or something to them laced with poison? I've seen more increasing stories of that happening. Or possibly negative outcome from a certain feed? |

| I am sorry for your loss. It isn't easy when we know it is coming and it's so much harder when it's a surprise.
Is it possible she could have had some abdominal trauma? We had one do the same thing. Was fine when we left and dead that afternoon. He had a torn spleen. He had no outward signs of anything wrong that morning. The vet said he bled to death internally.
