Yesterday, my trainer and I decided to take my three year old to her first barrel race at an AQHA show and I thought I would take my mare and run her too. I just have not been able to ride this mare since a riding accident (on another horse).

My trainer suggested that I get a saddle with a bigger seat because my saddle was throwing me forward. She suggested a Josey because of the forward hung stirrups and she told me to get a 16 inch seat. I am not a skinny person but I am definitely not fat. The seat size is perfect for getting down on my butt. Trainer also told me to go to a clinic, which I did. (Lisa Mitchell even commented that my 15 inch saddle was too small when I switched back to my old saddle with the 15 inch seat.

What I am saying here is make sure that your saddle is the correct size. The seat is not what holds you in. You have to be able to get your feet in front of you. Go to a clinic that is going to give you plenty of saddle time at speeds faster than a trot. Going to barrel races regularly helps tremendously.

OK, now for my brag. The quarter horse show had the AQHA class and a $500 added 4D. One of my friends had a smoking run and I ended up right in the middle of the 3D. Great improvement over being at the bottom of the 4D. My filly ended up in the 2D. No money but great runs.
